John McLaughlin on Barack Obama--Black people think he's an Oreo

16 Jul 2008 08:36 am

We now have John McLaughin, a font of ebonics if there ever was one, telling us that black people think that Barack Obama is an Oreo. It's true that black people, like any other group, have their bouts of essentialism. But it's always interesting to be accused of racial jingoism by the same folks who bought us "Freedom Fries" and would have the Dixie Chicks banned. But that's fine--attacking black people for putting on their pants one leg at a time has a long history. But you really should file Oreo, along with Whitey and Ofay, in the box marked "Things Black People No Longer Say, But White Pundits Wish They Did," Now, let's be clear--black folks can say some pretty mean things about each other. See below where Jamie Foxx destroys an innocent up-and-comer--"Maybe I should talk about how black people have to struggle. Yeah, that'll get em on my side"

Hey Ta-Nehisi,

What's up? I'm trying to get in touch. Can you e-mail me at jmcdaniel@slc.edu?

Jeff (from DC WritersCorps)

My friend's dad manages a 5-star in Toronto, and I've heard some horror stories about Jamie Foxx being a bit of a dick before...but dayumm. Still, that shit was hilarious, mean-spirited and unnecessary as it was.

TC,

I have to disagree with you about the Oreo thing.

I'm one of those brothers that "sounds white" on the telephone and every now and again someone still hits me with the Oreo comment. At almost 40 years old, and having heard that insult innumerable times, I know that I should be able to shake it off like water off a duck's back but it still cuts me to the quick.

Best,

HR

PS - Many thanks for the link!!!!!

HR- That sucks.

That video was so painful and hilarious to watch, 'I just did another joke that didn't go over'. heh.

Wow. Sorry to hear that HR. I thought Oreo went out with Sheila E. And yeah, that video is at once painful and hilarious. Although if you've ever watched a guy get destroyed in snapping contest, it's familiar.

I'm so glad that John McLaughlin is now the voice of black America, it's been a long time coming. The idea of the, "oreo" is absurd. It plays on negative stereotypes and if you don't fit into the mold of ignorance those stereotypes create, then you MUST be an oreo. It's only logical right? Also, it's annoying that, "acting white" means (disclaimer: in some circles) behaving with some common sense and using correct grammar but, "acting black" means acting a fool (disclaimer: in some circles). Good ol' stereotypes.

Ahhhh c'mon dude was unprepared. As an unknown comedian he should have came with his a game that night.

I think most black people have a distrust for black politicians who have a large white base. However, most brothers and sisters are behind this brother.

With Obamas war of hatred against America in full swing, and escalating, there isn’t a whole lot of humor going around about his presidential dreams these days. Being Americas greatest enemy from the inside isn’t anything anyone can find a happy future in. And America is only beginning to pay the price for his life in Washington DC that is still only speculation at best.

The comic's ideas weren't bad, but he kept flubbing the punchlines . Once Jamie starting explaining the jokes in real time, it was hopeless. Nothing kills humor like an explanation.

Not only did JohnnyBoy call him an ' Oreo', but quoted Jeremiah Wright too boot!

I think I'd be far madder about this IF Michelle Bernard hadn't of checked him right then and there as soon as she could.
