A question which only Big L could answer

29 Aug 2008 01:05 am

Here's an interesting one:

Can you son a woman? I just need to get the details straight for future use around the water cooler.
Hmm, I actually don't think you can. It just doesn't sound right--something abusive about it. You can put a woman "on blast" though, as in, Keith Olbermann just put Anne Coulter on blast. That probably is more in line with the laws of Ebonics, no?

I think phrases like this need to be slowly integrated into common white American parlance. Soon "talking white" and "talking black" will be things of the past. The terrorist fist jab was just the first step.

Why, just in the last year I've started asking people if they "want to run 5s?" instead of "hello, would you gentlemen like to play a game of 5 on 5 basketball?" Anyone can do it!

Threadjack:

BTW: Did anyone happen to read Brooks? I think he's trying to channel MoDo, I not sure. Anyway, MoDo's bad enough on her own terms, for Brooks to try it, it's cringeworthy.

Random question: Does anyone else think that Bill Kristol actually likes BHO a bit? I just watched the speech again on Fox, and Kristol's reaction was surprising. I think the same way about O'Reilly. I think Bill O'Reilly truly respects Barack Obama as a man. Now, I don't think these men will vote for him, but I have really caught them saying some of things that have thrown me for a loop...

Yes. And he likes Hillary. Hates Bill. Absolutely despises Bill.

I think Bill O'Reilly truly respects Barack Obama as a man.

Agreed. The Fox pundits liked the speech more than the bloggy right. I think it was because it was a meat and potatoes, partisan speech.

I'm still disappointed that you implicated Raekwnon in the whole D&D versus new rules AD&D thing.

FWIW my wife and I call each other "son" all the time and I'm a bit notorious for calling anyone and everyone (up to and including my Mom) son at every opportunity. For me it's an opportunity to break down gender in a humorous and affectionate way.

Big L - most overlooked rapper of the 90s?
It's either him or Lord Finesse

You can totally son a woman. Weird as it is to say, i think it's kinda sexist to suggest that you can't. I dunno why.

I mean, you can man-handle a woman (talking about the phrase, not physically puttin paws on a chick)

A lady can suggest that one get off her "jock".

So why can't a dame get sonned, son?!

I too think that you can son a woman.

The circumstances under which one gets "sonned" are traditionally male activities such as sports or battle or debating (about any number of topics). If a woman is engaging in any of these activites she has exposed herself to sonnage. I think that women are frequently sonned in the competitive workplace and I don't find it inappropriate. It's a necessary consequence of [near] equal treatment.

And yes, Big L was overlooked by many, and is unfortunately poorly remembered now.

Ask me again after Biden sons Palin.

@Laborlibert

LOL "she has exposed herself to sonnage" !!!!!!!

Awesome phrasing. Though it should be "possible" sonnage, since debating isn't exactly a womans weakness. I've had to put on many a coat of sonn block whilst arguing with a broad.
