Billy Dee Williams says "Step away from the Cotillion, ma'am"

12 Aug 2008 09:00 am

Long time poster Shani-O blogs about a week of reading, the Washington Post's internets for blacks, The Root, and concludes:

The multitude of views share the same over-earnest musings of privileged black folks who are mainly interested in talking about how privileged they are.
So what do you think Ta-Nehisi? Well, I'm glad you asked. Having written for the Root and other WashiPo outlets, I think its cool that they're offering a place for black writers. So often, much of what we believe either doesn't get said, or it gets said in publications whose subscription base is over 60. From that perspective, it's a good thing.

Still, I do think it's hard to do a black publication in this day and age. Not because we don't need one, but because we're all sort of at this bridge point. Take a look at this blog. Obviously I spend a lot of time thinking about black people. But I also spend a lot of time thinking about the Dallas Cowboys, video games and The Prestige. I try to render the world through an African-American male lens--its the only one I have. But I also try to remember that the world is bigger than that.

So... can you write about the Prestige? I really liked that movie. Also, are no Atlantic bloggers besides Jim Fallows watching the Olympics?

I think Andrew may be watching Phelps, but I'm not sure that counts.

I liked The Prestige too and I'd also be interested in hearing Coates' thoughts about it.

lol. seriously guys? i was gonna talk about
"mad men" today...

TNC,

I was going to add to the 'Prestige' requests - but given how good Mad Men has been so far, I'd prefer MM first.

meh...why WOULD one expect a web presence that speaks to ALL blacks? that's lazy and essentialist to boot.

me, i come here for the comments on fatherhood, the D&D references, and the cogent opinions you have on race and the f*ckery of stupid people. i'm black...where do i fit?

one last thought...show me a website that actually provides REAL, pragmatic advice for dealing with prejudiced co-workers, supporting family members less fortunate than you, and being strong without succumbing to mental stress...and THEN you've got a site that just might appeal to a majority of Blacks, regardless of class.

Yes, please post about "Mad Men." This show seems to continue to get better. Although I do wish Roger Sterling had more of a story line this season Frankly, I wish he was in every scene, but I suppose its still pretty early...

I tried to push the 'Atlantic/Wire' analog, but perhaps Atlantic/Mad Men would work better.

Pete Campbell/Ross Douthat is the first one that jumps to mind.

Perhaps Cooper/Fallows

Too obvious would be Salvatore/Sullivan

Depending on how charitable you're feeling

Joan/McArdle
Peggy/McArdle

Who would be Don Draper though?

André, you said:

"meh...why WOULD one expect a web presence that speaks to ALL blacks? that's lazy and essentialist to boot."

I don't think anyone would. But The Root isn't as varied as it could be, and that's my beef. I'll read Ebony or Jet, because they don't pretend to be anything other than pr machines for black folk. The Root supposedly represents more. I just wish it was a bit more progressive.

Also, Ta-Nehisi, way to make my post about you. You ARE a blogger!

Also, also: hey, I love cotillions!

Yes, seriously, but then again I personally don't care about Mad Men, so I'm biased.
