Well that does it for the Lieberman VP talk

Not that I'm into polls, but this is tough. Man, how unpopular is this guy?

Lieberman makes colon cancer look popular.

Lieberman & McCain are pricks. McCain is so God-awful scared Obama might get some decent coverage from his historic speech tonight, he's reportedly going to to air some smarmy ad during it in swing states. No matter what your politics, give Obama his one hour to accept his historic nomination from a major political party for President of the US. The historic nature didn't really hit me until I watched the roll call & saw those old black people weeping. (I know McCain's bitter because no one wants to go to his event on Friday, but sheesh.....)

Man, how unpopular is this guy?

The answer is: pretty unpopular. Lieberman, at the time a Democrat, couldn't win a Democratic primary in a Democratic State. He is actually less popular in his own State, a solidly blue State, than John McCain. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what Lieberman is supposed to add to any Presidential ticket.

You're right. It is tough. But I have exactly zero sympathy for the sanctimonious prick. Couldn't be happening to a nicer guy.

The one thing just about all Republicans and Democrats agree on: Lieberman is a terrible, unpopular person and would be an atrocious choice for VP. The strong McCain supporters on other boards I visit are utterly terrified at the prospect.

I'm watching the convention on CSPAN and sometimes CNN. Yesterday, when Obama was nominated by acclamation, John King of CNN said that Democrats and Republicans should step away from the fight for a few minutes, maybe the whole night, and just appreciate the historical significance of the moment.

There are many people who won't be able to do that and that is just simply their loss.

I grew up in the south during the civil rights era. I can just tell you that it is not just the "old black people" who are weeping.

Every night I pray at my bedside for a McCain/Lieberman ticket, but it's not happening. Head fakes all.

What's interesting is while Obama had a choice of at least five who wouldn't materially effect his popularity, McCain has maybe one- Pawletty. Otherwise, we're looking at Romney, Ridge and, I guess, Whitman.

This would be one of the downsides of being a backstabber. The people who you stabbed in the back hate you and the group that you tried to gain favor with don't ever trust you because, well... you are a backstabber.

The only thing that I ever had against Al Gore was that he picked Leiberman as his VP running mate in 2000. Of course, Leiberman probably didn't seem as bad back then because the neoconservatives had not yet taken over the government.

I hope and pray too that McCain picks Leiberman. Romney is a good pick as well (for Democrats) because all of the evangelicals think that the Mormon religion is a cult.

Leiberman seems to be hated by just about everyone these days.

No, Liza, Lieberman's always been a sanctimonious, finger-wagging, warmongering prick who owes his Senate seat to William F. Buckley and assorted, looney reactionaries' desire to knife liberal Republican Lowell Weicker for (a) sullying up their looney reactionary party with his moderate politics, and (b) supporting Nixon's impeachment.

This seems an appropriate posting to ask whatever happened to our White Spokesperson selection process.

Gotta give the people what they want TNC. Colbert or Nobody!

Does John McCain want to look like the sort of flip-flopper who listens to polls? Lieberman would be awesome!

I liked Russ's column answering the query "If not Romney, who?" with "Some person who would be really great, but I can't come up with any names of actual persons." I'll be looking at the R con for whom they consider their next great leaders, and it's interesting how hard it is for them to name any "great guy/gal coming up" who isn't Bobby Jindal. (Palin 's family scandal dropped her off the list of 2.)

From Marc, passing on that the Republicans cannot, in fact, find 10,000 people to hear McCain speak, even with the semi-promise of a veep unveiling. Significant enthusiasm gap, and I'm really hoping for some nice contrast shots following the rally.

Pawlenty would be a great pick.

Nothing like a bridge collapse to take people's minds off of hurricanes.

McCain only floated the idea of Leiberman so that columnists like David Brooks can gush about how they would make such an awesome team and how McCain is such a maverick. Then after McCain does not pick Leiberman (because its a politically suicidal), he can write about how McCain would have loved to do it, but the system prevented him from doing so.

McCain doesn't even have the balls to say that Leiberman would make a good VP, because that would kill him with the religious/conservative voters. So he lets the media get the 'inside scoop' on Leiberman so they can write about how he's such a maverick while having no intention of picking the guy.

Seriously, you should have seen Brooks yesterday on PBS gushing about a McCain-Leiberman ticket. Are we watching the same campaign? Does he really think McCain's support right now is built on independents? McCain's support is built exactly on Bush's support - conservatives and evangelicals. The only difference is its way smaller this time around.

Brooks et. al. need to get their heads out of the "isn't it pretty to think so" meta-world and back into the real world.

I wish McCain picked Lieberman. It would be a tactical disaster. If you want to suck all the enthusiam out of a room, send in Lieberman.

My hope is for a Romney pick because at least he looks like he might be able to govern, and since being a major party vice-presidential nominee means you are rather closer to being president than the average citizen, I would choose someone who seems competent. Republicans don't have many of those these days.

Lieberman blows.

I smell Mittens.

It's been said before but bears worth repeating, Mittens may never be our spokesman, but he is the whitest person alive.

On some level, I second Curtis. Of all the possible GOP Vice Presidential nominees, Romney is the one who I would least expect, were he to somehow ascend to the Presidency, to trade Ohio for three magic beans.

While it's entirely possible (okay probable) that the Lieberman talk is a headfake, I am keeping hope alive. The mere thought of a univerally hate pro-choice "independent" on at the GOP convention fills me with joy and anticipation. I have at least one day of dreaming up all wonderful scenarios...it's beautiful!!

Mr. Coates, since Joe won't get the nod, maybe you can throw him a bone. How about naming him pokesperson for all independents who really aren't? Sort of Maverick Jr.?

Re: What's interesting is while Obama had a choice of at least five who wouldn't materially effect his popularity, McCain has maybe one- Pawletty.

Supposedly, TX Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson is also under consideration. I am not aware of negatives she would bring top the ticket, at least not in regards to anyone who might poetntially votef or McCain.

Re: McCain doesn't even have the balls to say that Leiberman would make a good VP, because that would kill him with the religious/conservative voters.

Um, Liebermann isn't exactly noted as a secularizing politician. In fact he's rather blatant at adverstizing his religious observance.

Three magic beans for Ohio would be a trade up, though.

Hell, if you want to suck all of the suck out of a room, send in Lieberman. The guy just has some weird hero/martyr complex that makes him an asshole.

I think Kay Bailey Hutchinson is pro-choice. Not sure about Meg Whitman, but reportedly Ebay is very good to their gay employees RE: benefits, etc. Evangelicals can't have that now, can they? Then all the Evangels will be boycotting Ebay (along with McDonalds & Hallmark & Disney & ....)
