Good God. Watch this clip. Let's leave aside the fact that at eight, she almost certainly had no idea who Joe Biden was, the attack is little more than a half-ass passive aggressive jab on Joe Biden's age. Lemme get this straight: 1.) We know seniors vote. 2.) We know John McCain is older than Joe Biden. 3.) We know John McCain really needs seniors to be for him. 4.) We know young people are for Obama. So I ask, how does this attack make sense? Moreover, in the interview, she doesn't even deliver it effectively. It's basically a bad attack delivered at the wrong target.

Seriously, I don't get this. An attack on Biden as a "Washington insider" and Palin as the "outside reformer" would makes sense. Instead they seem to have gone with, "Well we can't attack Obama for inexperience anymore, so we'll attack Joe Biden for being too old, and hope that no one notices that our guy is even older." Who are these people? Seriously, who is scripting this? Are her handlers fools? Are these the people we are supposed to be scared of? Are you serious?

Sarah: You are not a pit-bull, you are weak-sauce incarnate. These men who are coming for you are not playing. I know it looks like they're sweethearts, but they do not come to dance. If you're going to take a swing at them, take a fucking swing. You're going to have to come harder than this.

UPDATE: Oh my god. I'm watching a live broadcast online. Katie just asked her what newspapers and magazines and books she's read. I bullshit you not. She couldn't name a single one--not one.

UPDATES #2: She was best on social issues. She made a decent case for being pro-life, and came off pretty soft on homosexuality. Of course her calling it a "choice" bugged me. But I'm not the audience.

You mean she didn't name the bible? I suppose she has the bible read to her and the interpretation spoon fed? Oh well. Somehow I'm not shocked that the McCain team missed this one.

Reading isn't a critical aspect of a person, but it certainly does reflect on the mindset. Someone who isn't actively acquiring information isn't very likely to be open about differing ideas and concepts. Reading is one of the most fundamental ways to acquire that information.

I think it's fair to say that almost any white collar job requires at least a college degree. To get a college degree, you have to read some books along the way. If a candidate for a white collar job is asked in an interview what books she has read, I think she should be able to name at least one.

This isn't just any white collar job, this is the Vice President of the United States.

It's astounding to me how many millions of people, even if this is a blowout, will vote for this woman.

This whole thing about clearing the expectations bar is a game for the punditocracy to play (the same punditocracy that called the presidential debate a draw or in favor of McCain).

The christian right is voting for these two no matter what she does. The game is with the undecideds (as always)... and the many undecideds out there who have been alarmed by her appalling lack of knowledge, curiosity and coherence (coupled with a propensity to not just lie, but to tell easily demonstrable lies) are not going to be mollified by Lou Dobbs telling them she "beat expectations."

She needs to turn in a performance so good that it frames her past performances as abherations. She needs to prove she's not as stupid as she's made herself out to be so far. I predict this is beyond her.

Transcript on books, from CBS via The Stump:

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

Couric: What, specifically?

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.

Couric: Can you name a few?

Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

Weird answer (surely she can at least name the Alaskan papers, right?) All the same, I think the question kinda crosses the line. No other politician in America would ever be asked something like that. It's already been established that she's incredibly uninformed; if she does read papers, she either only reads the sports sections or has major retention issues. So there's no point in asking, since we already knew the answer.

I think she gives the answers she does, because it has worked for the Republican party in the past, and according to polled conservative voters, it appears it's going to continue to work for them. The McCain camp is not stupid. Incompetent and unable to lead, yes, but not stupid. Palin is out there because she will get the votes...these answers do not hurt her. She has locked down the Republican base for McCain, exactly the job she was brought on for, and none of these answers is affecting that ability at all. If she was to suddenly say that she's decided that her daughter needs to get an abortion because she's too young to have a child, yeah, that might be a statment that mattered to the Republicans. But not being able to name a single newspaper she reads? I don't think they care.

I think where McCain might have miscalculated is among the independents who are the key to the election.

Come on. Palin is a blank slate and there are only a few weeks for people to get a sense as to what she's about. In that circumstance, and considering the possible importance of the job she's going for, it's not just a fair question - it's also a FUCKING SOFTBALL most people could knock out of the park.

Kinda make you want to redefine dumb!
Yeah, I knew she was not too well versed but she sets a new standard: most American do have some sense of the process or institutions that are engaged with foreign policy, health care, transportation, education, and so forth. None of these are perfect but all serve worthwhile purposes beyond the narrow view that some folks have; Palin appears to have slogans, ideology, and lipstick, all else is not needed. McCain seemed to have believed this, now he is reaping the fruit of his selection. Also, just what has McCain actually done in public life. In sum when one gives dumb a bad name, one's options are limited to being finished.

Implicit in this criticism is the assumption that one would know that Palin doesn't read papers or mags. And as little as most around here think of her, I can't imagine anyone betting much, before now, that a governor and VP candidate doesn't read ANYTHING (even online?). As someone mentioned, this question is the meatiest of softballs, and it stumped her. Think about that. Is there any question Palin can't answer that is not a gotcha question?

I really disagree as to the premise of the question. It's worth knowing a person's intellectual background and where their ideas are coming from. If you're getting all your ideas from your own head and people you know, then you're going to have a pretty limited range of ideas. I mean, does she depend on Limbaugh and Hewitt for the news? Is it condescending to assume that she reads? Couldn't she have just said the NRO or something?

Personally the arguments of "respect" or "deference" drive me batty. This is a democracy, remember. Voters decide who is in charge. In order to do that we need know who these people really are. Not who their handlers want us to think they are. Who they are. It's a job interview. If I were going on a job interview trying to claim I'm competent or know something about a particular field, I'm going to expect to be grilled about any and all of my claims in that interview. She claimed to have a worldview not based on traveling much, but on reading. Perfectly fine, maybe less than I would like in a world leader, but nonetheless, not disqualifying. So, this was a follow-up to find out what sort of reading has formed her worldview. And she can't back up that claim. Now, you as employer, that's okay with you? Sorry, not enough for me.
