I find this comment by McCain (from the article) disturbing:

"I know what fear feels like. ... I know what hopelessness feels like. ... I felt those things once before. I will never let them in again. I'm an American. And I choose to fight."

He felt those things "once" before? So he's telling us that since his POW years, he's never allowed himself to feel fear or hopelessness, and he never will. He will only fight. Fighting is his only answer to hopelessness and fear...and that's what makes him an American?

Wow. There's something demented and scary about that.

Tessa hits what's off about the new stump speech: Lots of pleas to fight, no explanation of what fighting would entail. Vote Republican and feel a Reaganesque sense of hope, I would guess.

This might get into the don't-hire-a-maverick-as-executive thing, as well. McCain hasn't commanded, and the history he points to has involved following orders even at great personal cost. If he were rallying people behind a Buffett plan, the maverick "fight fight fight I know what it is to fight, to endure" might work. But they decided not to do policy proposals, so what is the greater strategy guiding our fight?

He had $77 million COH at the end of last month. If he raises $100 million in September, plus something similar in Oct.(which we won't know until after the election), he's in position to completely inundate McCain. I've heard that Obama is even running ads in California. At this point, he has more money than he knows what to do with. As a result, it seems like Obama will definitely try to run up at the score where possible(all of the "blue" states especially). I can't wait for Brokaw and Blitzer to flip out because they'll be calling the race before polls on the West Coast even close. Obama will be laying that much of a beat down.

Right. And I would say that without the context of who and what we are fighting for, "fighting" becomes a demented and scary concept. So too is the idea that you can't afford "to blink". These ideas lack sentiment and reasoning, and therefore seem reckless and dangerous.

It's time for Obama to get medieval.

After the last debate, he should launch a relentless ad campaign against not just McCain but the Republican party. Trash their brand now so thoroughly that it will take them a decade to recover.

He should do this in presidential battleground states and in those states with close senatorial and congressional races. The money he has raked in now is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and needs to be used, not just for winning the presidency, but for making it a successful presidency. The more he helps Democrats win now, the more loyalty he can count on over the next eight years, and the better for the Democratic Party as a whole.

Mccain's campaign could use all the help it can get. Weren't they supposed to put out some major policy initiative today? Ooops. What's their message for today...and how many hours will it remain the same? Maybe he should have set up his campaign headquarters at his mansion in Sedona, instead of DC.
