Get him a body-bag, Johnny

12 Nov 2008 12:39 pm

Will Smith's kid is doing a remake of the Karate Kid. Sam Jack is trying to play Sho-Nuff in a remake of the Karate Kid. I have issues with the latter, not so much the former. Busta Rhymes needs to play Sho'Nuff. That said, any day I can post video of Mr. Belding, Daniel-san, and the Cobra Kai is a good day. Also, who would be Mr. Myagi? Bruce Leroy?

UPDATE: Incidentally, there is some cool poetry here--"I was a super-hero, king of 1985\I showed no mercy, I was always Cobra-Kai\But I caught a Crane-Kick to the face..."

That should be "The Last Dragon" for Sam Jackson's turn as ShoNuff, the Shogun of Harlem.

Whole 'nother thang from Mr. Miyagi's Karate Kid.

Joe Klein's conscience

Lets face it. The casting of the Mr. Myagi role is crucial for this movie. I expect this movie to bomb anyway, but it will only have a chance with the right person cast in the Mr. Myagi role.

I heard Lloyd from Entourage is playing Mr. Myagi.

That was an awesome music video - thanks.

Chow Yun Fat would make a good Miyagi.

Sammy Jack is perfect for ShoNuff. By the way Showtime has had the Last Dragon in its rotation for the past week, I have seen it 3 times. I fear Busta would make a mockery of it, turn it into a cartoon. Kinda like when John Goodman played Babe Ruth, Samuel playing ShoNuff would be more like DeNiro playing Capone in Untouchables. Only an actor like Sam would be able to mine the golden depths that is Master ShoNuff.

As for Mr. Myagi, how about making him a true bad ass. Ken Watanabe would be perfect. He was the dude that played the lead Samurai in the Last Samurai, he played the head monk in Batman Begins, and the General in Letters From Iwo Jima.

The real dilema for me is, who in the hell plays John Kreese???

What's the big rush for Will Smith to get his children -- who aren't even teens yet -- in the movies?

It's bad enough that no-talent Jada pops up every now and then, but now it increasingly seems that he wants America to studiously ignore his children, too. Stop, Will! Just...stop.

I don't get it. This bid to get them working and make them stars seems neither organic nor healthy for those kids.

As for 'The Last Dragon' and Samuel L. Jackson, well, why is Hollywood trying to rape my childhood? Yeah, yeah, I know it's not a good movie to begin with, but *still.*

WriteBlack-

Not a good movie to begin with????
I don't even know how to respond to that....

...maybe I do:

Why did Mike Lavonia claim New York was ancient Babylon?

If you are a Karate Kid fan, you need to read this

The "true" story of Johnny Lawrence

Admit it, when you walk in the door, you've got your kids to answer "Sho Nuff" to all your questions, don't you Ta-Nehisi?

Patton Oswalt's site is blocked at my workplace as "pornography." Please insert the joke of your choice here.

Even though I think a Karate Kid remake is just proof that Hollywood is the place good ideas go to die and bad ideas (not the first movie, the remake and all the fucking sequels) get reborn like characters from Chinese mythology, I second the casting of Ken Watanabe. Bonus points if we get a scene with him shirtless.

(If I were still a Pop Culture doctorate wannabe, I'd get a nice little essay about cultural appropriation as it addresses the original movie and the remake out of this.)

Maybe we are due for a remake of "The Last Dragon."

Shemar Moore is perfect as Bruce LeRoy. Busta, I think, already parodied Sho Nuff in one of his videos a few years ago. "Dangerous," maybe? Someone refresh my memory.

The real question is who would reprise lovely Vanity's role as Laura Charles? Beyonce, maybe?

No talent Jada? Dude, Jada could just sit still and not say a single word and have more talent in that hot little a$$ than anyone else in the movie.

Word. TNC. Busta was born to play Sho-Nuff.

Destor Villain

@blackink

yeah, Busta did it in the Dangerous video...pure hilarity!

the real question should be, why can't Hollywood leave well enough alone (or find some original scripts/stories)...what's next...a Wild Style remake??....now I remember why I don't go to the movies....

@keith I love 'The Last Dragon' unreservedly and know all the dialogue from memory, but I know that it's not actually good.

Fun? Yes. Good? Not really.

@blackink Shemar Moore's not quite right for Bruce Leroy. It may have to be an unknown. I fear the casting of Omarion or someone of that ilk.

For Laura, maybe Meagan Good? Definitely not Beyonce.

Why is Shogun in the Karate Kid? I had to have read that wrong. And thank you D.Villain, hollywood is pathetic. I won't be seeing any remakes.

Maybe no remakes, shanilink, but how about another prequal? I don't think this will be considered off-topic, but I just wanted to share something I've been working on. A couple friends and I are about halfway through a screenplay that is basically a prequal to the movie Road House. Yes, all the questions will be answered! How did Dalton come to be known by only one name? When did he get that degree in philosophy from NYU? When did he meet Wade Garrett? And most importantly, when did he realize that 'pain don't hurt'? Don't steal my idea, please.

@WriteBlack, just a little sarcasm...

I wasn't really saying it was deserving an Oscar or anything, I saw an opportunity to post a clip of Sho-Nuff...I took it.

Stacy-

Can we also find out how Brad Wesley made his hundred-thousands???

We're still debating on whether or not to bring Brad Wesley into it. Maybe as a passing reference or something. It makes it difficult because Garrett claims in the original that he had never heard of Wesley. It may be venturing off too much. But I'd love to hear any thoughts...

isn't Sho-Nuff in "the last dragon"

Uncle Ebeneezer

There was a guy at a Halloween party that was dressed like "Sho-Nuff" and I thought it was a brilliant choice, made only more brilliant by the fact that I was about the only person who knew who he was (and it was a BIG party.) It filled me with nostalgaic joy knowing that I actually saw that movie in the theater...twice. Hearing that Hollywood is planning to remake it, completely negates that feeling. Not only does it prove that Hollywood is desperate, but it also threatens that something "precious" will be ruined. I'm not feeling "the glow" about this story. And isn't Sho-Nuff supposed to be under 50 years old??

The real question is how this all will affect Itunes sales of El Debarge's "Rythym of the Night."

Stacy- your script sounds awesome. Make sure you answer how a bouncer somehow acquires national fame that preceeds his arrival. And bonus points for a side-plot involving how Jeff Healey's character went blind.

Betty Chambers

I don't hate Samuel Jackson, okay I can't stand the man, but I need to ask: Can't they find someone else? These folks need to give some other guys work! There are soooooooooooo many people who need work who are wayyyyyyyyy more talented.

Tired of these stale faces.

Chris Christman

All you Last Dragon haters can "kiss my converse."

Did anyone else catch that Mr Belding was running that pizza joint in the music video?

Dread Pirate Robert

I ate my popcorn with chopsticks for months after watching The Last Dragon when it first came out.
