This is James Bennet, editor of The Atlantic.
Most readers know that the views expressed on Ta-Nehisi's blog are his own and don't always reflect the views of The Atlantic. Such is the case with regard to Ta-Nehisi's "analysis" of the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins. Our institution has partnered with the Redskins, and Daniel Snyder, on a number of projects, and we have a great deal of respect for Snyder's, uhm, personnel moves. We at The Atlantic do not take sides in the ongoing dispute between that asshole Jerry Jones's Cowgirls and the winning machine built by Daniel Snyder. The Redskins are historic leaders in the sports world, and Dan Snyder may be the greatest owner in history. We look forward to box seats in the future. The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood
Until, they stop moderning both teams as NFL celebrity club, they will not see nor near the Superbowl!
This is teh creepiest blog post evah.
All of which is moot, as either team will inevitably be crushed by the mighty power of Matt Ryan's Magic Elbow!
And Michael Turner.
Frak me, I just norked coffee over this. Bwahahahaha! Well played!
Yo TNC,
First off, what does the Biggie line allude to?
Second, being from Texas it is kinda hard being a boys fan, but never will I doubt the Star. Besides, never in football history has there been a team like the early 90s cowboys. Emmitt, Aikman, Irvin - The Greatest Ever.
Non believers hate on.
Alex M,
"I'm not running see, I got my gun and...hold up..."
An allusion to defiance perhaps? Substitute pen for the sword?
Also--70s Steelers PWN the 90s 'Boys.
Im gonna go make a youtube video yelling "Leave Ta Nehisi alone!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWSjUe0FyxQ
Ah, this is one of those funny blogs. Good satire :)
You should take a firm stand against Jim Zorn's hyper-timid bullshit playcalling, Ta-Nehisi.
brilliant!
go skins.
You can't really blame 'em for not wanting to be associated with the Cowboys ;)
Lame...come on, after Goldberg's post, this is just a cheap immitation.
It's funny how Goldberg has such disdain for blogs and yet can still stay on top of the latest controversy. No time to respond to Ackerman or Greenwald - that's beneath him - but he's got plenty of time to mock CAP.
And it's clear that your views don't represent the standard Atlantic line. I love the magazine, but it definitely leans right.
The Redskins? Defending Snyder? That could be too much. Might have to find another site for a productive wasting of time at work.
Your site breaks in Firefox.
Maybe I am the only one...?
Alex M & Juba,
The 49ers teams of the 1980's would run roughshod over the 1970's Steelers and the (early) 1990's Cowboys.
James Bennet needs a pair of shoes thrown at him! Go on TNC, take off your size 16's and throw at his fat head! This is a farewell to you, you dog! A Kiss for all the Cowboy's fan! You should throw comboy's boots at James Bennet!
The site doesn't break in Firefox 3.x Matt. You should upgrade.
Truly outstanding post. It became totally convincing when you properly recognized that the name of That Team is the cowgirls.
Fightin Words,
Um...I think they beat the 90s Cowboys, ok, but I dont see them triumphing over the Steel Curtain
Juba,
in the track BIG takes out two guys creeping on him after the line. TNC alluding to editor coming up on him? I wonder if the editor, or any one got the line?
Naw, 70s steelers could not take down the Holy Trinity of the National Football League, but they are second best I'll give you that.
Priceless....very very funny....congrats on the hand of god blocking that field goal last night....I got money on the Cowboys to win it all...and even though they still go a chance, I'm sick to my stomach.
me thinks yglesias is getting played right now!!!
i'ma say no on the Niners > Stillers. Niners had an underrated defense for sure, but those Steel Curtain teams were good and lucky. That's a tough combination to beat.
Truly beautiful - homage? that's not quite the word I'm looking for, but it'll do, homage it is, then - to Jennifer Palmieri's infamous 'guest' post over at Matt Yglesias' blog.
Well played, indeed.
Triple LOL to th 3rd power. That was toooo funny. he had me going up until the expletive thrown before Jones' name.
Anyway, feel the worst for Tom Cable, Raiduhz interim HC actually insane enough to lobby for the job permanently. I'd give it to him based on that kind of insane blind devotion alone.
Hey!! what's your beef with halvah??! i would like to have a word with that editor of yours! what did halvah ever do to him? LOL....i dont know which one is better, your's or goldbergs...both are hilarious! I'd have to go with goldberg just because of the halvah reference. Please don't hold it against me! It's like with white people and cucumber sandwiches...
Sure, the 70s Steelers had a great D, but how often did they have to defend a team with a QB like Joe Montana throwing to Rice, Taylor, Craig, Jones, Rathman, etc?
???
Jim Bennett would never resort to any intellectual thuggery. Perish the thought.
I don't know shit about football, but this is FUNN-EE.
Now hang on there a minute, too many steves. The 1970s Steelers had to defend against teams like the Cowboys, with QBs like Roger Staubach* throwing to receivers like Drew Pearson and handing off to backs like Tony Dorsett* and Calvin Hill, and the Raiders, with Ken Stabler tossing to Dave Casper*, Fred Biletnikoff* and Cliff Branch, not to mention the Dolphins, with their HOF trio of Bob Griese*, Larry Csonka*, and Paul Warfield*. (All of the above were All-Pro at least once; the ones with asterisks are in the Hall of Fame.)
The Niners you list are all great players, no argument, but Rathman never even made a Pro Bowl, let alone an All-Pro list; Jones and Taylor were Pro Bowlers, but never All-Pros. Craig made an All-Pro list--once.
Montana and Rice are obviously among the best of the best (Rice may well be the best wideout in NFL history), but that doesn't mean their SF teams were more stacked or more powerful than the best teams of the 70s. In fact, with two more NFL teams existing after 1976, the talent pool was a little thinner in the Montana/Rice days than in the years of the Steel Curtain, the Doomsday Defense, and the Purple People Eaters.
And yeah, I'm old. Doesn't make me wrong.
/satire on
Unbelievable. How can you guys discuss this without even ONE mention of the plight of the Native Americans at the hands of the white settlers, which, I assure you, included the horrible Cowboys?
Nobody cares that every time a Native American looks at a Washington logo or hears a sportscast about the Redskins the Great Spirit kills a kitten?
When will the carnage end?
/satire off
So whose next? I vote for Sullivan.
oh shhit, you got a red dot on your head too
\oh shhit, you got a red dot on your head too\
As a Hindu sniper, I am vaguely offended...j/k
Looks like the Yglesias created a monster~who's up next?
TNC & JG for couple of the year
Damn, I wish I hadn't been eating something when I read that. OTOH, I'm a Packers fan, I need the laugh...
It's funny and all, but do I detect a bit of glee and satisfaction at Yglesias's plight? Hey, you decided to leave, how do you like your current boss now?
Although, if Matt didn't leave, we wouldn't have TNC here, so I guess all is well with the world.
Not from me Pete. I got my first shot here guesting for Matt. I owe him, think the world of his blog, and wish him all the best.
In all honesty, I think it's an incredible thing that someone can make a living on the blogosphere. The more people involved, the more democratic the process and there's little more democratic than a (barely) moderated forum of bloggers and talk-backers.
From balls-to-bones, I don't think this phenomena has really sunk in with the Boomers and I expect great things as the Gen-X'rs move from younger to middle-age and start taking over the various reigns of media.
Hopefully we'll do a much better job of it. All the tools are there.
As a Cowboys fan, I have to say the Snyder is one of my favorite Redskins ever.
And to deal with that really racist name, why not put a redskin potato on the helmet? Keep the name, remove the racism.
