One of the best places to hang out on the nets is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ place at The Atlantic. T-NC seems like the kind of guy I would like to have a beer and play X-Box with. Literate, quick, and I bet he is a world class trash talker, should the ne... [Read More]

I'm sure most who read this blog already know but it's worth repeating...

The N word is synonymous with the word "dude" for most of us under 30.

There is nothing nefarious about it unless someone is trying to belittle you, at which point it's just comical, as in "I can't believe s/he thought that would hurt my feelings."

I say use it up, the more nebulous it becomes the better.

k1

I second you K1. But I will be notoriously mad if a white dude call me that day. It is what I called a dumb war!

The guy was funny but I hope he is not just a one topic comedian.

One day I hope a black comedian from Memphis talks about our use of the word Mane in the same fashion. Mane=Man in Memphis btw.

lol...I thought "Canadian" was code for black.

Bullshit.

That "ethnic dude tries to talk like a white guy" crap is beyond hack. Enough. White people don't sound like Kermit the fucking Frog, and those of us that do recognize it and disguise our voices, or at least throw in a lot of profanity to cover it up.

TIRED of this shit. Might have been funny when Richard Pryor did it, maybe still when Eddie Murphy did it, but we've been subjected to Carlos Mencia for the last five years or so. For fuck's sake, let it die.

"Hey, white people and (black/asian/hispanic) people are different! Now laugh about it!"

FUCK no. I'm done.

Ta-Nehisi Coates

Everybody's a critic...

I have to say that I haven't really liked the All White People Talk Like Squares bit in quite some time. The last guy who was funny at it was Chappelle, but he's funny at damn near everything. There is no way I am the coolest kid on the block, but I don't talk like I have Asperger's syndrome either. But meh, as insults go it's kind of lame anyway.

Mencia is a waste of protoplasm, he's just not funny to me. Most comedians who cop the "If you don't get me it's your problem" act blow right past me.

Vinegar...priceless...lol

I get very disappointed when I pay good money to go a local comedy club and get one-trick ponies who's entire act is based on racial comedy. Up until recently, it was almost always at the expense of the square, prudish white person. This was especially true here in St Louis where nearly all of the local openers were like that.

What's semi-refreshing, but really no different, is the sudden flood of white comics willing to do it in the opposite direction. Usually funny once through, but only because of all the pent-up angst from all those years as a comedic foil. After that, if they don't have any other pitches to throw except the raceball, its just as boring.

I watched the DL Hughley show on CNN the other day and was surprised to see that it didn't totally suck. I was expecting the worse because the CNN promos for the show make DL look like a buffoon.

White people don't sound like Kermit the fucking Frog,

LOL. I actually always thought the standard white guy imitation was meant to sound like midwest news speak. Dan Rather or something. I think that what this guy was doing. But now that I think of it, you're right. A lot of comedians - DL. Hughley comes to mind - tend to exaggerate the nasal quality.

Fuck right I'm a critic! You think Amos and Andy didn't get on people's nerves after a while? I'm not feeling oppressed, don't get me wrong, but be fucking FUNNY. To KevDog's point, I KNOW Asperger's guys who code software for a living that don't sound like that.

Christ, someone please come up with a funny take on a THIRTY YEAR OLD BIT, or stay the fuck off the stage.

What's semi-refreshing, but really no different, is the sudden flood of white comics willing to do it in the opposite direction.

I saw a white comedian do a Bernie Mac impression once which struck me as very funny but it seemed to make a lot of the rest of the audience, mostly white, kind of uncomfortable. It was before Mac died by the way.

"I actually always thought the standard white guy imitation was meant to sound like midwest news speak."

Chappelle's is exactly that and ranges from the nasal to the very deep (like during the Racial Draft).

Since I'm mentioning Chappelle, and since my wife simply doesn't see the brilliance, I've got to give him the most significant props I can for the whole Wayne Brady bit. Unbelievably funny on so many levels. Genius, really.

Ta-Nehisi Coates

It's weird because I didn't even pay any attention to the "white imitation" he did. As you can tell by the post, I was more focused on his jokes about nigger.

The one cool thing about Eddie Murphy is he actually had an arsenal of white imitations. He had that standard nasal bit. Then he had the whole Italian thing in Raw. And the Jewish dude in Coming To America.

Someone please explain to me how we go from "Delirious", "Raw", "Coming To America", and Gumby from SNL, to Norbit.

WTF was he thinking?

And someone please tell me where the comma goes when you're writing a list of items in quotes. Inside or outside (lol).

Hey wait a minute, don't white people sound like Barack Obama?

One thing that will be hard for mediocre comics to latch onto is imitation of Obama. His everyday speaking style is VERY middle American. About the only real hook in right now are the extra pauses.

People who are cool and in control are hard to mock out, mostly because everyone else wants to be them. You'll notice that there aren't any good comedians mocking James Bond.

Uh-oh. Brent is commenting on comedy again. Its only a matter of time before ML&J shows up.

"You'll notice that there aren't any good comedians mocking James Bond."

Eddie Izzard...incessantly, but usually only Connery.

Its only a matter of time before ML&J shows up.

LOL. I won't take the bait. I promise.

Scott, I believe the comma goes inside the quote and the last comma before "and" is not necessary; although there's a huge debate about it. Google Oxford or Serial comma.

Chappelle also does a few different white voices. My favorite is the white husband in the 'Trading Spouses' skit...

"Actually, I would prefer if I could just stick my penis through the hole."

Also, in regards to the Eddie Murphy, I heard he was being cast as the Riddler in the next Batman movie. Sounds crazy, I know, but that would probably be an excellent career choice at this point.

The Italian and Jewish impersonations are exaggerations that are at least based somewhere in the world we actually live in. I've only ever heard the generic white guys nasal voice coming from people who aren't white who are trying to be funny, and usually failing.

Murphy denied the Riddler rumor.

I've also heard, but not gotten any further info about, Will Smith and Johnny Depp. 'Course, Depp won't do it if Burton doesn't direct it. Frankly, Burton's Batman has been eclipsed in just about every way, so I doubt that will happen :)

It's been a while since I've seen the Izzard bit, but doesn't Izzard mock the actor and not the character? That's what I meant, if not said.

"doesn't Izzard mock the actor and not the character?"

The accent more than anything else. Moses with a Connery accent is pretty damned funny.

Scott

I don't know about anybody else but Norbit was fuckin funny to me.

And Norbit....on WEED? WOW lol

How YOU durrin.

I've seen russell's specials and no, he's NOT a one topic guy...this was actually new to me, but he slays me from time to time...as always his best work is his earliest work...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHpXDF0iBuw&feature=related

it's chopped up, but if any one has an hour to spare...

-sg

If I never knew who Eddie Murphy was or his previous accomplishments, I'd agree that it was sort of funny.

But to see Murphy do that was like watching Robin Williams do RV or Steve Martin do Cheaper By The Dozen (1 or 2).

Just...sad. I know, TNC, everyone's a critic.

Scott

I don't give a damn, this clip has me on the floor every time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=769qgg7OekE

to everyone getting their panties in a bunch over the "generic white man's voice"...dude, seriously...it's standard procedure about now...and if it bothers u that much, don't watch comedy...ever...as for mr Mencia...wow...probably the laziest comic ever....

Peters did that "generic white" voice for approximately two seconds over the course of the clip. He did a mountain Tennessee accent and a Boston accent - the latter was pretty darn good, I think. I don't see how you could get pissed off at Peters for resting his comedy on a "generic white" voice unless you came into town searching for it already.

-sg

Yep, forgot about the Chinese guy too. Great camera work in that bit too!

Bruce, if someone got up and started telling jokes about airline food I would be just as bothered by it. If you're on the stage, be original, but most of all, BE FUCKING FUNNY. It's not a lot to ask.

I'd also like to point out that the fact that I sound exactly like Kermit the Frog when I speak has in no way influenced my rants here today.

he was "fucking funny"...for the 7 of the 7:25...atleast i thought he was funny...the "generic white guy" accent...wasn't the fucking point...if he's supposed to "be fucking funny"...then...i guess, u have to "get the fuckin point"....

DivGuy, talk to me about a fucking Boston accent.

For the record, Peters had some funny takes in that set that were refreshing. But anytime you hear generic white guy voice it should immediately set off your internal hack alarm.

I know humor is subjective, but aside from the "Mondays" joke, this Peter's character is about as funny as an overturned school bus in my opinion.

Like alot of the humor on these deaf-comedy shows, it's endless pandering to the black audience in the form of "white guys are lame/racist/dumb/rich" jokes. Enough. Does anyone actually find this ish funny? Especially from an Indian-American named Russel Peters doing his best "black comedian" impression (convenience store not casino? That shit was almost funny when it was dot not feather; and where does an Indian get a name like Russel Peters anyway?).

I have no problem with anyone making fun of white people, I do it all of the time, although mostly on the ethnic level since the "white man" portrayed in these comedy acts doesn't really exist. You may think I'm being touchy here, but I really just want to see stronger efforts and better comedy.

Sean Connery on Celebrity Jeopardy is pretty damned funny.

Look at this. TNC was trying to lighten the mood and he's instead exposed a gaping flesh wound.

THIS is why I love this blog!

To be fair, Peters threw in a redneck and a pretty awful Boston accent in there as well.

Some people on here seem familiar with his other work. I'm curious if anyone has ever seen him do a bit on black racism against Indians.

laborlibert...a little bit....not much though...which indians are u refering to? the casino-indians or the convenience-store ones ?

Imma go ahead and say it. A lot of yall are full of shit. I know and have seen and heard real live white folks talk just like the guy who was imitating them. I grew up in Tennessee and there are a lot of goobers who still talk like the impression the dude gave. AND arabs are referred to as sand nigga. Now whether he is funny or not is as usual debatable. Some of the stuff he said was as much just true as it was funny. But to nitpick about a generic white guy impersonation is weak. Hell white comedians still do the generic white guy impersonation. On another note, OF COURSE he is going to use material at a black comedy show thats geared towards black folks. You think he is gonna come out cracking about cucumber sandwhiches? Cmon man. I know everybody is a critic now adays and Red Foxx the guy wasn't but some of this criticism is just wack if you ask me. I never saw I would see the day when it would be politically incorrect to parody a generic white guy lol

-AJ

"Look at this. TNC was trying to lighten the mood and he's instead exposed a gaping flesh wound."

The vast majority of white people are not racist. However, the vast majority of white people have a very hard time dealing with double-standards in terms of what can and cannot be said, especially when those arbitrary rules are imposed because of things that they had nothing to do with.

The double-standard of political correctness, especially in terms of this particular discussion is what gets under our skins quickly.

Fucking Christ on a pogo stick, SGWHITE, will you pay attention?! It's not about political correctness, it's about being fucking FUNNY. You shouldn't be able to get up on stage and say, "Take my wife, PLEASE!" and have the audience respect you. Same goes here.

Oh, and you're seriously coming with that weak cucumber sandwiches shit? Seriously?

Murphy's problem is the same as Burt Reynolds': Both were inside cocoon of superstardom, and lost all touch with reality. Even when they stumble on a brilliant career move (Jack Horner in Boogie Nights or Jimmy Early in Dreamgirls), they don't understand what made their performance so great, and insist that as a Huge Star (Eddie) or A Serious Actor (Burt), they're above such supporting roles.

-DB

Good point. And exactly what happened to the Star Wars three newer movies. Horrible beyond horrible. Pandering, insulated crapola. I loved the way The Simpsons satirized it.

It doesn't get under my skin, and I'm pretty damn white. Making fun of whities is fun. So is making fun of blacks. And Jews. And especially Asians. Its important to be sensitive at times, but watching comedy isn't one of them. Let's all lighten up a bit. Its amazing how much criticism there is every time TNC posts comedy. Either you dig it, or you don't, but getting worked up about white voices does come off like fake rage.

Now I'll shut up, becauuse I can't watch this clip at work. Maybe you guys are exactly right.

peevedIndianwithAngloname

Dear loborlibert,

Before making up some ignorant comments, at least think about the basic world history lessons you've learned in high school.

Add to that, unless you are from some small town, the chances of you not coming across an Indian with an Anglo name in big U.S cities are minimal.

Please. For future reference, if you come across South Asians with Anglo or Portuguese last names, please note that it is NOT uncommon, and those in South Asia are quite used to that.

As for Russel Peters, maybe you should google him. His parents are both Anglo-Indians.

Bruce:

Indians from India.

And Bruce... watchout. Moe Larry and Jesus is wringing is hands in front of his computer right now, thanking the gods for another comedy thread, trying to think of new ways to point out how unfunny he thinks you are, and wondering whether he played out the Bruno Kirby from Good Morning Vietnam comparison the other day.

-Stacy

Here, here. I agree. My point rest more on the fact of the huge gap in time between Pryor and Lisa Lampenelli. Its only been recently that the humor is a two-way street. That's the part that's hard to swallow, primarily because it was cowardice above all else that caused that span of sans tit-for-tat.

MoeLarryandJesus is definitely an asshole. Hearing him talk about sports is infuriating. But the guy is pretty funny. Its hard to give him credit because he can be such a prick, but I enjoy his posts.

Scott, are you feeling oppressed? Need a hug?

Who said anything here about racism? Or double standards?

My point, my only point, was be fucking funny.

AJ,

Your point may only be "be fucking funny," but I have a hard time believing you'd be cursing so much about this if the guy was doing Bullwinkle impressions and telling people to 'Cut. It. Out.' I don't think its so much the lack of humor with you.

Dear Peeved Indian:

The part about his name was a throw-away comment that I really didn't think about much other than the fact that as a life-long NYer I've known at least hundreds of indians and have never once met one with a name as Anglicized as "Russel Peters". Never, not one. Just found it (1) odd, and (2) ironic since his act seems to rely on his heritage.

Yes, Russell Peters is kind of a one trick pony; his topics are racism, and his heritage. But I don't fucking care. He's the only Indian comic out there speaking about this stuff. There are almost no mouthpieces for us first and second generation Desis. I love that he's talking about the everyday racism that South Asians and other ethnic minorities encounter and the confusing place that we find ourselves in as we try to reconcile our various cultures.

He's not Indian-American, by the way, he's Canadian.

AJ...u're still on the same track?? damn man, are u slow or something? I know, it's about being funny right?? yeah, that's it...because it's not about u being slow and nit-picking the effing jokes?? no...not at all, it's not about that at all...it's all about your selfrighteous indignation against bad comics and cucumber sandwiches...man get over yourself.

What's the Indian guy's name from Human Giant? He was also in the best episode of Flight of the Conchords. That dude is funny.

Damned right I'm opressed.

I'm white, male, Christian, happily married, father of healthy non-addicted/non-incarcerated kids, non-handicapped, not facing foreclosure, not unemployed, solidly middle-class.

There's damned few of us, which makes us...the minority!

FIGHT THE POWER, BROTHER!!!!

AJ

I don't know what sticks up your ass but you are at a 10 and you need to bring it down to about a 5.

I've only ever heard the generic white guys nasal voice coming from people who aren't white who are trying to be funny, and usually failing.

I am calling bullshit on that. Just like there are black folks who really DO sound like the guy on "Barack the Magic Negro" there are white folks who really DO sound like the generic nasal white guy. Whether all or most white guys sound like that is besides the point. You know that there is at least one white guy you know who talks like that. Hell watch MSNBC or FoxNews all day and you will see plenty of em. Carlos Mencia's weaksauce non withstanding comedians will always do the generic white guy shtick as will they do the dumb brotha shtick. It is what it is.

Antoine Larotre

To those who don't know Russell Peters, the guy is very very funny! Been a big star here in Canada for the last 15 yrs, and he is not a 1 trick pony. He does great bits on ethnic diferences between various community in Canada whithout been mean or stupid. Check his video on Youtube.

"There's damned few of us"

I know you are joking, but no, there are a lot of you. Too many for my taste.

I have nothing against MLJ, but his crusade against Brent's sense of humor the other day went a bit too far. It was very un-three stooges and even more un-Jesus of him.

Agreed. He also lost his shit last weekend when he realized the Pats weren't making the playoffs. It was kind of awesome.

Wait, how did a post that was supposed to lighten the mood turn into yet another race conversation?

Ta-Nehisi Coates

So much for lightening the mood. Might as well go back to talking Bobby Rush and gay marriage. Everywhere, in all things, there's someone to take offense.

I have nothing against MLJ, but his crusade against Brent's sense of humor the other day went a bit too far.

Didn't bother me really. I mostly just found it pretty dumb and was interested to see how long he would keep it up. In fact I made a point of inviting him to insult me as much he liked. It seemed to amuse him for the most part.

@Laborlibert
Yeah, my heart skipped a beat when u mentioned his name...but anyway, i posted a link above u should check out...if u ask me, it's good stuff...and he does talk about racism between blacks and indians in this clip...the part about swinging by the convenience-store...it might not be funny to u, but it did touch the topic...but anyway...
as the pissed off indian gentleman mentioned, alot of anglo-indians have english names...or portugues (met alot of gomez's and rozarios in my days for some reason), depending where u come from...it's kind of like black people having english names...a little bit atleast...u probably forgot, and it's no big deal really...but what does that have to do with being an indian comic who touches on race-issues? what, he has to be named gurprit rajeev to have a say in the matter?

-TNC

It's Stacy's fault. Apparently there's too many of "those people" for good taste :)

Besides...your blog isn't really a kum bi ya sort of hangout, which is why most of us hang out here in the first place. Kudos for trying, though.

sgwhite -- Had I not been at a 10, none of this lively discussion would have taken place. I'm not sure what "sticks up my ass", but it's not comfortable. And the people on MSNBC don't sound like that, not to my pale white ears, anyway.

Bruce -- Yes, I'm an admittedly slow self-righteous nit-picker. Thank you for noticing.

Scott -- You seem to have taken my bait, and it appears that Stacy has taken yours. Lovely, this feeding frenzy.

Glad to have helped out here, folks. My work is done. Enjoy your day!

Okay, two points.

1) Peters is Canadian. Born here, raised here. He's seen a lot of vinegar. He's huge here. Even my redneck relatives can't get enough of him.

2) He does a fairly funny bit about how even Indians refuse to believe that Peters is his actual name.

Frankly, his work speaks for itself, and this clip isn't all that typical. I invite folks to check him out. Like him or don't, I assure you he's not suffering. (He's no Shaun Majumder, of course, but that's just my preference). He does some fairly funny stuff about how his dad always liked to beat the kids, for instance. Now of course, Cosby did a whole album on that too, so I guess nothing's really that original. I suppose he could have gone on Def Comedy Jam and done seven minutes about Kraft Dinner, but then you'd have one puzzled audience and we'd be saying he was ripping off Andy Kaufman. Yeesh.

Fighting Words

Stacy,

Why is making fun of Asians especially fun? I'm not trying to get all righteous, I'm just curious. I grew up around a lot of Asians.

I thought it was funny..but then i got all worked up and emotional about nothing really...besides...scott's right...i would lurk around these halls if i didn't smell blood...
For the HORDE!

Scott,

For the record, I was just kidding with you. You perfectly described every male in my family. And you almost described me, except I have no kids, and I'm not a 'believer.' Peace, brother.

Fighting Words,

I wasn't really being serious. I just happened to hang out with a lot of Koreans through school and work. I feel like I just know them a bit better.

"he has to be named gurprit rajeev to have a say in the matter?"

Yes. He must be readily ethnically verifiable. Seriously though, of course not. I just found it a bit odd given the content of the act and it reminded me of how people criticize Carlos Mencia for giving changing his name to be more Mexican (supposedly his real name is Ned Hapfburg or something).

I'm mostly Irish-American, but my first and last name are usually thought to be Jewish (my first name is Jewish (David); although my last name is often a Jewish first name, it is an Irish or British sur-name) so I'm the last to seriously attack someone for having a non-ethnic appropriate name.

Ta-Nehisi Coates

Bruce,

Blood and thunder.

Fighting Words

AJ,

If you have ever been to an "open mike nite" or a "comedy college," you'll realize that most comediens are neither funny nor original. Hell, even the famous comics aren't really that original. It is really, really, really hard to make it in that business.

Second, when you are doing comedy, you have to pander to the audience. Since this was on Def Comedy Jam, most of the jokes were tailored to a black audience. If he was on the road in Boise, Idaho, his jokes would probably be different.

Fighting Words, why must you draw back in?

"You have to pander to the audience".

NO YOU FUCKING DON'T.

It's pandering to the audience that undercuts and demeans actual talent, and that is true in all media, in all artistic expression, in all communication.

-Stacy

Mutual kidding.

-Fighting Words

Not necessarily. When I hit the comedy clubs, they're pretty much lily-white. The local and regional black comics aren't pandering to that audience. Likewise the national comics that came to perform at various school-hosted events while I was at college. 70-something-percent white, but the schtick was the same. On the other side of the coin, I recently caught part of that "white boyz in the hood" or whatever it was, and they had three or four white comedians doing their bits in front of an overwhelming black audience. A lot of that material was directed at the audience, not pandering to it.

Just for the record, the comedy itself doesn't bother me at all, especially if it's funny. I recognize a one-trick-pony for what they are, though, and feel sorry for their lack of talent.

On the other hand, over the years it just got tiring that, like not being able to put a comic of a certain prophet wearing a certain thing that goes bomb, there seemed to be some sort of unwritten comedy law that you couldn't make fun of stereotypically black characteristics. That's changing and changing fast.

Stacy, I missed this earlier:

"Your point may only be "be fucking funny," but I have a hard time believing you'd be cursing so much about this if the guy was doing Bullwinkle impressions and telling people to 'Cut. It. Out.' I don't think its so much the lack of humor with you."

Bullwinkle and "Cut.It.Out" don't sell out comedy clubs. But Carlos Mencia has bought a mansion, maybe two, by doing hackneyed bits in which nasally white guys are featured prominently. Am I filled with rage over that? Fuck yes! I'm sitting in a fucking cubicle and that no-talent fuck (and many more like him) are sitting poolside!

Also, as I alluded to earlier, my cursing is largely to mask the fact that I sound like a dorky white guy.

AJ

To be fair Mencia also does shitty parodies of people of his own race so he is an equal opportunity hack. Everyone should be outraged.

Nice try to lighten the mood on the second day of the new year, Ta-Nehise.

Looks like everything is going to get dissected either because a lot of people have the day off or a lot of people aren't in a light mood.

I thought the guy was funny.

By the way if we are crucifying shitty comics who get paid way too much can somebody explain how Dane Cook is funny to me? I really don't understand how he made the $3 mill that his half brother stole from him. Help me understand. PLEASE!

Sorry I mispelled your name. It didn't look right, but I didn't check.

-AJ

To be fair, Mencia, who I've watched bits and pieces of and tend to agree with your opinion of his talent, does lampoon his own ethnicity as much as Chappelle does his.

I always considered Mencia to be a show decision motivated by Chappelle's success, pure and simple. Is Mencia even still on?

-sg

We're supposedly crucifying shitty comics who rely on racial stereotypes to become successful. Dane Cook, as far as I know, doesn't. He's actually got some pretty funny stuff, most of it on the physical side. He's not really found a big-screen break through yet. The whole finger thing is quite lame, though. However, he's the guys with all the money. Not me. Yet.

Fighting Words

AJ,

I must draw back in because I live on the West coast and I don't get to read these morning posts until 2-3 hours after they have already been posted and discussed. Some of us just come to the party late.

AJ and Scott,

Ok. Maybe my choice of words when I said, "pandering to the audience" was poor. I think that Scott's use of "directed at the audience" was better. I apologize for that.

However, I guess what I meant to say was that different rules apply to different audiences. I guess that there are several unwritten rules regarding some of the "racial comedy" (for lack of a better word).

For instance:

Black comedian with predominantly white audience = racial comedy is ok.

White comedian with predominantly black audience = racial comedy is ok.

White comedian with predominantly white audience = racial comedy is NOT ok.

If a white comedian was saying "racial jokes" in front of a largely white audience, I would feel really uncomfortable.

Meh.

Dude was alright. Has some potential, but by in large it felt like he was just ripping of rock/chappelle/etc..

They say that the best writing comes from personal experience. TNC is a writer, so maybe he can confirm or deny that. But the funniest part of the clip was at the begining when he was talking about being Indian. The later stuff felt more like pandering to the audience.

Oh, and the "white guy voice" doesn't work for this guy because he doesn't have an "accent". He already sounds exactly like a white guy. Chappelle on the other hand, not surprsisingly, has the cadence of a black dude, thus making the "white guy voice" hysterical. Trust me, if this guy sounded like Apu the white guy voice would have been worth its weight in gold. As it is, he just sounds like ME trying to do the white guy voice.

Fighting Words

SG,

Dane Cook has is not, has never been, nor never will be funny. I don't understand his success either. I don't think his stand up is funny. I don't think his movies are funny.

However, my girlfriend thinks he's cute. Most comics are not cute. Maybe that explains it.

"Bullwinkle and "Cut.It.Out" don't sell out comedy clubs."

Joey FUCKING Gladstone could sell out any fucking comedy club in this entire motherfucking country, cocksucker!!!

Triumvere...interesting point...didn't think of it that way

Hey Stacy

Next time don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

I bow to Stacy.

Holy mother of God that was funny. Tears rolling down my cheeks. Well played, madam, well played.

Scott says

sg

We're supposedly crucifying shitty comics who rely on racial stereotypes to become successful. Dane Cook, as far as I know, doesn't. He's actually got some pretty funny stuff, most of it on the physical side.

Scott I was just trying to move us away from race talk by attacking the first white comic I could think of. But I do have to ask you, where exactly has Dane Cook been hiding his "pretty funny stuff" because that shit must be right next to the WMD in Iraq. I haven't even seen one joke that the guy has told that made me giggle. Besides only fat guys do good physical comedy.

Sorry, I haven't been that angry since the DJ on New Year's refused to play Jesse and the Ripper's "Forever."

So much for that New Year's resolution.

AJ,

I should probably let you know that Stacy is my last name, and that I'm a dude. See, probably not as funny now. Sorry!

Stacy, be careful...he's looking for another windmill to kill off...

-SG

The one that comes to mind quickly is Dane Cook's bit about how tickling always starts funny and ends horribly. There's more to it, obviously, but that one always struck me as funny as hell because a) I'm an oldest brother and 2) I have a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old.

Stacy -- male, female, or anything in between, that Joey Gladstone comment was gold.

That said, you might consider using a different name when you post. You know, something manly, like "Bruce".

AJ...where u in the backstreet boys??

Bruce,

No I wheren't in the Backstreet Boys. Where you?

no i wasn't...i did go to the try-outs though...but i didnt't get in...some guy named AJ took my spot...his name matched his manly mannerism...

Good for you, sweetie. Good for you.

C'mon fellas, be nice. Although it is entertaining.

We all know Kevin was the cute one, anyways. AJ has not aged well.

Hey can we cut this shit out before it gets started? I mean damn we already had the NFL thread shut down right when we were getting into this weeks playoff matchups, are we really gonna get this one shut down too over some dumb shit? Jeebus man somebody anybody erybody LIG!

sgwhite,

What NBA team do you root for there in Tampa? Are you in a Griz fan? I've heard you talk about Memphis quite a bit. Or are you not an NBA fan?

Off topic, I know, but I figure threadjacking should probably be allowed after 100 comments and the Backstreet Boys have been brought up. That's the only thing I miss about Matt Y. Those NBA threads were excellent.

Actually I am a Lakers and a undercover Grizzlies fan. I grew up loving the Lakers but I have to roll with my hapless hometeam too.

And you?

My apologies. I didn't realize there really was an "AJ" in the Backstreet Boys, so I guess that comment made sense on some level. Hugs and kisses to Bruce, and to all a good night.

it's ok AJ...im sensitive about my manly-man name!!

For the first time ever, I did a fantasy football league this year. My partner at work was the commissioner and pretty much talked me into it. Since the Rams sucked balls this year, it was the only thing that kept me interested.

Buy in was $70, which I thought was reasonable for four months of fun. When I won the superbowl last week, I found out the payout was $650+, I called the wife to tell her, to which she responded, "what are you going to do with your half of it?"

My half...

MY HALF???

I don't recall her helping with the draft, making the picks each week, then suffering the slings and arrows of cross-league smack talk. In the interest of harmony, though, I relented insomuch as it's going toward household improvements we normally wouldn't spring for. Not the power tools I wanted, but oh well...

If I were gay and in California, I could do with it whatever the hell I want to :)

Sg,

I grew up in St. Louis, so I never had a team to root for. I've tried to pick a team and stick with it, but its hard to do. I do like the Pistons quite a bit, but I really, really like the league as a whole now.

Scott,

I'm feeling you on the Rams. I hope we get the that OT from the 'Bama in the draft. I assume that's who we'll take, but its kind of early to guess...

I grew up in Chicago and was fortunate enough to be old enough to enjoy The Fridge and the '85 Superbowl. When I moved to St Louis for school, they were still dickering over the Rams coming here.

I decided that if they did, I'd give up Chicago teams of all sports for my new home. I only had to wait until the '99 Superbowl, arguable one of the best superbowl games in my lifetime.

People, predominantly the types that listen to NPR and ONLY NPR, ask why we put so much emphasis on men playing children's games (which, in and of itself is an ignorant statement, but I digress). What I have experienced, though, is the way a winning team can elevate, however briefly, the entire emotional gestalt of not just a city, but an entire region.

My Rams will conquer in 2010. 2009 will have to be a rebuilding season cuz we're sorely in need a real quarterback (Sorry Bolger).

Stacy and Scott

Yall need a QB so yall can finally admit that Bulger is not the guy. I am sure there will be some talent coming out this year too. But I don't think the O Line which evidently can still block if you look at Stephen Jackson's numbers is your most pressing need. A really good CB wouldn't hurt but Ill be honest in that I don't know if any big time corners are coming out this year.

-sg

blink blink blink

what?

lol Scott, great minds. But I have to say that you will probably have to wait until 2010 to get back on top. Of course the choice of coach will have a big impact on that. Me personally I think the Rams should choose a young successful college coach ala Bob Stoops who can shape a young team in his own image. And a rookie qb, this year non withstanding, is going to need some seasoning at first. But I would be encouraged in that Marshall Faulk and Dan Dierdorf are helping in the head coach search if I were yall.

I'm really disappointed that Stacy is a male.

For serious, this is an example of how a non-black comedian can get up in front of a black crowd, say "nigger" about 15 times, and walk away with his life.

Contrast this with, say, what Michael "Kramer" Richards did onstage and tried to label "comedy."

did the Laugh Factory really need to ban use of the word on its stage? or just Richards' use of the word?

All y'all upthread talking about how Peters' stichk is wack, and ethnic comedy is played, and why can't everyone use the n-word, need to think about what he's really doing and why it works.

Liza,

Sorry. So were my parents, and half of my girlfriends.(I'm not even sure what that means)

sgwhite,

The Rams will not used that 2nd pick on a QB. At least I hope not. The Rams do need a good corner, but there are no big time corners coming. I think that dude from Illinois is the most highly rated. We do need a middle linebacker so we can move Witherspoon back to the outside. That backer from Wake Forest is supposed to be a beast. I think his name is Curry, but they have him projected as an OLB, although he weighs 255 or something.

Our offensive line is not good. Jackson had some big games, but he's a beast. They've completely ruined Bulger, but I don't see the point of wasting a high draft pick on a QB that's going to get creamed. I might not mind using a high 2nd round pick on a Graham Harrel, perhaps. Or someone in that mold.

Your Rams owner Georgia Frontin' Rear End, as we refer to her in LA, was a sick excuse for a human being, even for an NFL owner. Jerry Jones looks like St. Francis of Assisssi next to that bitch. Yeah, I know she's dead and I have no more respect for her 6 feet under than when alive. Ask any sportswriter here who covered the Rams and you'll getthe real on that organization. They f-d over Erik Dickerson big time, sold out all the talent on that roster, let the team die on the vine so no one would pay to see them and kidnapped them to St. Louis where she reaped huge profits.
How did she inherit Carroll Rosenbloom's team? You remember him--her husband--man could swim 5 miles mysteriously drowned in his own damn swimming pool. Some mystery.
F the Rams, I hope they have that curse longer than the Bambino's. Go back to rooting for the Bears; at least their fans are realistic enough to not expect to win.

Stacy

I hate them but QBs are the most important part of any teams offense no matter what any commentor will try to say. You can get Graham Harrell all you want and he will end up like Calvin Johnson because you still need someone to get the ball to him. Bulger has been shook ever since Martz was there. He gets killed now many times when he doesn't have to. I think Martz taught him that throwing the ball away was a mortal sin or something. Besides that one O Lineman won't have near the effect on the team that a good young QB will. See Baltimore Ravens

As for the QBs coming out we have to wait to see what underclassman are going to come out. I think the kid from Georgia is plenty good as is Tebow even though many people don't agree with me on that one. Isn't the Texas Tech kid a senior too? These new breed of QBs are a lot more mobile generally which will make having a super O Line not as important. But it will still come down to having the right coach to mold him and protect him a lot by running Jackson until his tongue is hanging out. See Atlanta Falcons and Mike Turner.

-cocolamal

I'd be just fine if we could all walk away from the use of such a charged word, but it would have to be at mutual consent and linguistic evolution, not someone arbitrarily telling us what we should and shouldn't say, or one group pressured to use or not to use a given word.

I mean, do you think that they stopped using "doth" and "thou" all at once because the king said so? Nope, the language just evolved.

Comparing a black comedian making fun of white people as part of his act to Michael Richards' unfortunate breakdown isn't apples to apples. That was not material. That was oaffishness and, quite frankly, stupid. It was not, WAS NOT, stand up comedy.

Along those lines...Eddie Izzard (British comic, one of the very best, look it up and thank me later) made the observation that English-speaking countries are really the only one's with a culture of comedy that allows stand-up. It is starting to spread throughout the rest of the world, but for the longest time, it was as foreign as foreign can be in non-English-speaking countries, even if the comedian was fluent in that language, as Izzard is in French, and did his material in the native tongue.

I'm not sure what that says about us, but I bet it's something good for a change.

sgwhite,

Graham Harrell is the QB from Texas Tech. I think you were thinking of Crabtree. He's projected as a 2nd rounder. That's why i was saying I wouldn't mind grabbing him early in the 2nd.

You're right about Bulger. They say old boxers can't pull the trigger. That's how Bulger looks. Scared. You can count the times he throws off his back foot in a game. Its terrible.

Frankly, though, I want the Rams to sign Vick. Break him out if we have to. I went on NFL.com and tried to buy a gold Rams jersey that said 'FREEVICK" on the back. The order went through, but they cancelled it a week later. Some bullshit...

Stacy

Sorry got sidetracked actually watching the game. But I think Harrell will be gone by the second round honestly. They didn't believe in him at first because of the offense he runs but i think the guy is legit!

Vick is going to be back in the league quicker than most think. I wouldn't be surprised if JJ signed him since evidently the Cowboys are evidently now the D-Block of the league

I have nothing of substance to add, other than to say: THANK GOD this conversation has digressed into football. It appears to have collectively un-bunched everyone's panties.

Speaking of football: We have the playoffs this weekend and a whole bunch of head coaches which have been fired. This is just begging for a Open NFL Thread from Ta-Nehisi (not that I'm trying to tell you how to run your blog or anything... :-))

I thought dude was hilarious...and I don't even remember him doing the standard white guy accent, but then I'm not a white guy, so I guess I was listening for that. It does amaze me though, that AJ latched onto that like a pitbull and didn't find anything else funny. Just when I think white people aren't completely full of themselves, along comes someone to prove me wrong. A horrible generalization, I know...but you get the point.

Stacy

I forgot to add that other than Maleluga (sp) from USC I don't think ANY LB should be taken that high and I am not sold that he should for the Rams. The Ray Lewis' and Derrick Brooks' aren't that plentiful in the league and even then they need a lot of help around them. After taking two D Linemen in successive years in the Draft I think its time for the Rams to fix their offensive problems.

omg eddie izzard, is he the guy who stars in that show about travellers that's told from their cultural perspective and uses their vernacular, but doesn't resort to flat stereotypes?(The Riches, watch it, you'll thank me)

Fighting Words

Tyler,

We could also talk about college football (Pac-10 teams are 5-0 in bowl games this year!!!).

Fighting Words:

College football brings back too many painful memories for this once proud Buffs fan. It's like being reminded about the really, really hot girl you've loved and lost.

That said, that thread would still be an improvement.

I'm really disappointed that Stacy is a male.

Reminds me of that one bad date in college where I...

Never mind.

KevDog,

Speaking of bad college memories: At least you never had a college date that ended up with your being shoulders deep in a cow's lady parts.

Maybe that's the real reason I repress college football and not that the fact that the Buffs completely went off the rails both competitively and morally.

dkan you ignorant slut, read the fucking posts. I said he had some funny takes.

Look, pretend you have a pet peeve, like, I don't know, like you really hate it when someone who isn't of your race/ethnicity comes in late to a discussion, misrepresents your argument, then self-righteously dismisses all other members of your race/ethnicity based on that misrepresentation. Let's say THAT was your pet peeve, and then you saw someone do exactly THAT. Wouldn't that bug you? Wouldn't that bug you enough to make a comment or two?

Note to self: Some memories are best left to one's self.

"After taking two D Linemen in successive years in the Draft I think its time for the Rams to fix their offensive problems."

I probably agree with you. I just think the offensive help should come in the form of a 6'6", 340 Tackle. Pace doesn't have much left, either, and Barron has 2 false starts a game.

Stacy

I think the Rams should address any changes on the O Line should be through free agency. Do you REALLY want a rookie LT or RT protecting Bulger or any other QB on your roster? If you think he is scary now...

Damn, I don't know how I missed BG's comments. Sorry for your loss, brah. But I'm plenty realistic. And the Rams and Bears have both been in Superbowls this decade. How's your team doing?

Tyler
As a UCLA Bruins fan, I feel your pain. Why do the Buffs keep their coaches so long though? We at least change ours once in awhile. It's like driving the wrong way down the highway while still refusing to look at the damn map.
At least we have basketball to look forward to, dude. Tonight the Presidential Brother-in-law gets a look at our Bruins. Good luck with game-planning Ben Howland! I sincerely hope Coach Robinson beats the rest of the Pac-10, though, especially the Trojans.
In fact, that reminds me: TNC: Sir, with all due respect, HOW ABOUT SOME LOVE AND BASKETBALL THREADED HERE???!!!
Since it's Friday I'll sign off with this ditty from Charles Bukowski

sgwhite,

Considering the fact that Jake Long, Joe Thomas, and Ryan Clady were three of the best tackles in the league this year, I absolutely think you are better off through the draft. The Rams aren't winning shit next year anyways. I can barely think of any elite OT's that don't play for the team that drafted them...

-Stacy

The linebacker thing reminded me of something I've not seen in a while and that my co-worker has NEVER seen (but then he's never seen Blazing Saddles, either, gasp).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzToNo7A-94

As was mentioned earlier in this thread about Chappelle's Wayne Brady bit, that clip is absolute genius.

I don't think any non-white person on this thread needs to have the experience of ethnic/racial misrepresentation explained to them.

I can turn to Fox news and learn about terrorist fist bumps. I can ask Chip Saltsman about that Magic Negro who just won the presidency. I could watch VH-1's "I Love New York" for some insightful commentary on black womanhood. I could go on, and on...

Stacy

I personally think Joe Thomas is overrated but I am pretty harsh in my criticisms. I would also point out that there are probably more 1st round busts as O Lineman than any other position whether people realize it or not. Jake Long did great this year for a rookie but guys like Cherilus and Williams not so much. I just don't think you go that route when the O Line to me wasn't the major problem. You could do it, but I think you will still suck without a young QB who you can groom for the future.

As for elite O Linemen who switched teams.

Leonard Davis

Alan Faneca

Kevin Mawae

Steve Hutchinson

Willie Anderson

all come to mind. I would say the Rams should go after Jason Peters in Buffalo as it seems that union is about to end pretty badly.

Scott

This clip is newer and much much better.

cocalamala --

Since you don't need misrepresentation explained to you then clearly you agree with my point, right? We're on the same page in that regard?

More importantly, Real or Chance?

I only have one thing to say about college football....

SEC

I'm happy to see this got over 130 comments, considering I tipped Ta off on this one. I figured TNC would like the nigger jokes, as did I. But I mostly like it, being Indian myself, because it makes fun of prejudices from whites and blacks towards Indians. I grew up with it. I was either in all white crowds, all black crowds or a good mix of both so I've heard it all. Sure, the jokes aren't all that original, but for me to see an Indian dude talk about this stuff was nice for a god damned change!

As for the stereotypical white guy voice, Peters doesn't do it every single time. He is pretty funny here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H9PTljv1R8

Lastly, if we are going to talk about truly funny comedians, Louis CK is the best. By far.

Most slept on black comic in my opinion....

Earthquake

Fighting Words

SG,

Re college football...

Who?

Stacy
Like I said, it's basketball season; I've moved on.

Matt, I watched a couple of other youtube clips that earlier posters linked to, and Peters is actually pretty funny. The "Indian slaves in Africa" routine was seriously, seriously funny.

Fighting Words

You know, the conference that has won 3 of the last 5 BCS championships thats going for a 4th in a few days.

Them.

I disagree whith you because the impact and scale of misrepresentation is totally different between whites and minorities.

For every ethnic comedian who puts on his Kermit voice to mock someone like you, there are plenty of counter-examples of non-nerdy white dudes to nourish your ego. In comedy and other media, there are plenty of images heroic, selfish, complex, scientific, rich, poor, historic, futuristic images of white men. Almost every story in American film and television features a white male protagonist - and a different facet of that experience.

Minorites don't have that breadth of representation. A lot of the stories told about us aren't actually authored by us. Many depictions are totally inaccurate if not insulting. We have to look hard to find ourselves reflected truthfully in this culture. We encounter erroneous beliefs in others who have only had access to misinformation about us. This impacts our ability to make positive first impressions on other people, and is especially damaging at crucial times like when applying for a mortgage, going on a job interview, or dealing with a law enforcement officer.

Maya -

I haven't seen that one, but I will have to check it out, thanks.

Sg -

I watched some Earthquake, I like it.

As for Louis CK, I just got a short clip in a hurry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra58oCnMaV8&feature=channel_page

He says the oddest shit and it gets me every time.

Matt

Didn't the LouisCK guy have a show on HBO for awhile like a sitcom with bad language?

Fighting Words

SG,

I think you need to check your spelling. When you are talking about the best conference in college football, it's spelled P-A-C 10, not sec.

Anyway, before I get accused of threadjacking, I do want to tell you that I agree with your comment about Tim Hasselback being the worst NFL analyst on ESPN. And that says a lot. Can anyone named "Hasselback" not be a tool (well, his father who played for the Raiders).

SG -

Yeah he did, and it was horrible. I hate that it happened. He has done better things. Wrote for Conan a long time ago. He's also worked with Chris Rock (Chris Rock show and co-wrote "I Think I Love My Wife") Somewhat recently he did an HBO special called "Shameless" and a Showtime one called "Chewed Up."

Here is an older clip of Louis CK about gays/gay marriage. It starts to get good half way through: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd-pqRhskMI&feature=related

Okay, I've done my part for LCK haha...I will stop.

Oh by the way, SG, whats your prediction for the Okla/Fla game? Florida's defense is a lot better, but I don't know. I hate Florida so I hope Okla does it, but really I just hope it's 45-38 or something....I'm still dreaming of Texas, USC, Fla and OU in a four team playoff.

Fighting Words

The PAC 10 has one team, USC. The SEC would wax that ass any day of the week top to bottom. Hell our doormat Vanderbilt even won a bowl game this year. 8 bowl teams buddy. SEC rules the BCS.

sgwhite,

1. Yes, Louis CK had a sitcom on HBO. I thought it kind of sucked. But that's because it was filmed like a play, and they weren't good enough actors to pull it off.

2. I won't debate you as to whether or not those tackles are considered elite, but your point is well taken. Gallery is the only top five pick tackle from the past 10 years that I can think of that's a bust. I'm sure there are more. I do think that quality linemen can be found anywhere in the draft, and they come from a number of small schools. We'll see. I guess it depends how much of a sure thing(as if there is such a thing)this dude from 'Bama is.

Fighting Words,

You don't even believe the words you are typing about the Pac-10. Its SEC, then Big 12.

Matt

I hate Florida too being a Tennessee alum but I have to roll with the Gators. The thing most people didn't have in the Big 12 was the LBs that could run with Oklahomas TEs and RBs. Florida has speed in spades. I think special teams might be the key though and Florida has a return man that is ridiculous in Brandon James #25. He is a game changer in every sense of the word. Plus Harvin will be back to full speed on offense. I think it will be close and I don't think any team will break 40 but I expect Florida will pull it out in the end.

Although I will say debating college football conferences is kind of silly. College football fans tend to be a bit more delusional than even your normal, asshole fans.

Harvin will shine. His draft stock is going to go up about ten picks after this game.

I still keep thinking that Tebow will eventually have a bad passing game and throw a costly interception at a some point. But I don't think that will happen against OU's secondary.

I can't wait.

Fighting Words

Stacy,

You're right about college football fans. Last night, I spent about a half-hour reading comments on Arash Markazi's blog (at Sports Illustrated) about Penn State not being "tough enough" because they didn't start a fight when the USC player planted a flag on Penn State's endzone.

I said this on another blog, the worst thing about being a Cal grad is that you have to root for USC in these bowl games because it makes our conference look better. God, I hate USC. I don't know if you have ever met anyone who graduated from USC, but it is nicknamed the "University of Spoiled Children" for a reason.

Anyway, I don't think people give the Pac-10 much credit. USC can beat anyone (well...except Oregon State). Oregon and Oregon State are good, and when they are playing well, they can beat anyone. But when they are not playing well... The problem is that the teams in the Pac-10 are so inconsistent. Oregon State can lose to Stanford one week, then beat USC the next.

As for Cal. Hey, we can beat Vanderbilt.

Ta-Nehisi Coates

Everything turns into football. I thought about fishing through here to find someone to reprimand for hijacking. But I can't reprimand you all. Somewhat belatedly, I say, consider this your open thread. It's your blog. I just write in it.

Fighting Words

It's my fault for hijacking. Sorry.

But at least we won't talk about the Patriots on this thread.

Coates

Oddly enough, this time football actually toned down the thread. And I think somebody up yonder pointed out that we waited until after like 100 comments were posted before we went nuts. lol

Thanks for the open thread.

One last thing about the BCS Championship game. One guy who nobody has been talking about that I think is going to make a HUGE impact on the game is #8 Carlos Dunlap. Dude is a beat as a Defensive End and he doesn't even know what he can do yet. He is going to be harrassing the shit out of Bradford all night long.

beat should be beast. I gotta learn to slow down.

Boring. And using the "n" word remains uncool. SORRY. But, if you must? Tell a joke, you know, that configuration of words that elicits laughter. How UNFUNNY a clip. I laughed at DL's coked-out facial expression. Now, THAT'S always good for a laugh. And, hmmm, I guess under a different definition, it could even qualify as a joke....

Fighting Words: I beg to differ! We wuz robbed! Robbed!

Just kidding. I'm a longtime Pats fan, but it's hard to get too worked up since we did it to ourselves by losing to Miami and the effing Jets.

Back to the BCS...

Fighting Words: at least we don't have to root for Stanford in a bowl game to represent.

Lever,

You're boring. You were on the last Chris Rock thread complaining about how inappropriate he was. What type of humor do you like? Seriously.

Raising a big fuss over a comedian using a cliched voice seems pretty ridiculous to me--it's not like the voice was the whole joke, it was just part of the delivery of the joke. If you think the material was bad overall that's fine, but in that case I doubt you'd have found him funnier if he used a more "original" white-guy voice in the course of telling exactly the same jokes. Anyway, since when is every comedian expected to be a master of realistic accents?

This might be a little personal but I just got wood watching Arenas return that punt for a touchdown. I want THAT GUY on my team. Thats what you call "want to" and "not being denied"

coco --

Read and learn.

Here's the comment I responded to:

"I thought dude was hilarious...and I don't even remember him doing the standard white guy accent, but then I'm not a white guy, so I guess I was listening for that. It does amaze me though, that AJ latched onto that like a pitbull and didn't find anything else funny. Just when I think white people aren't completely full of themselves, along comes someone to prove me wrong. A horrible generalization, I know...but you get the point."

So the "misrepresentation" I was referring to was this fool's misrepresentation of what I've been saying in all of these comments. He thought he knew what I was saying, then used that misunderstanding to say something about "white people". Fucking weaksauce defined. And you should call it as it is, whether I'm white or not.

I have made no comments about the stand up act being racist, oppressive, offensive or ANYTHING OF THAT SORT. I've said the white guy voice is UNFUNNY and HACKNEYED. And that, to me is the greater sin for a comedian.

People are reading shit that isn't there. Drop your expectations and read the words that are actually there.

Ta-Nehisi Coates

OK. I think we've heard enough.
