The prospect of Christopher Hitchens getting down to Biz Markie, is only slightly less improbable than the prospect of a black president.Postracial, indeed.
« Boomers and race... | Main | They aren't who we thought they were » From the annals of post-racialism19 Jan 2009 10:00 am
Last night at The Root ball, me and Kenyatta are cutting the rug, during the old school set. Biz Markie is on the wheels. And somewhere between the "All Night Long" and "Got To Give It Up" I peep Christopher Hitchens, mid-groove, with some dime-piece on his hip. Philosopher of all things, William Jelani Cobb, who was dancing with his date a few paces away, offered the observation of the week, and the week had just begun...

The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood
OK, May I be the first to plead ignorant. I assume that "on the wheels" refers to the DJ, but what is the "dime-piece" on Hitchen's hip? Is that a reference to his date? I can't think of anything else. Some one please help this 40 yr old.
I thought it was a gun.
A bag of pot?
A fancy cell phone?
I'm so out of touch.
Now get off my lawn!
wait wait wait.... the author of God is Not Great christopher hitchens? that one? hahahahaha
do you have video or pics?
i would love to see that!
Hitchens was at the Root ball...? Have we fallen into some parallel universe? I've got an image in my head of C-Hitch doing the Cupid Shuffle, and that makes me giggle.
A dime piece is an exceptionally beautiful woman according to the urban dictionary.
C Lin, you can google these terms and get it on the first hit.
I, of course, am a narcissistic boomer who ruined the planet, and I am also too old to know the terminology.
A "dime-piece" is also known to some as a "hottie".
As for Christopher Hitchens getting down with the Biz, I don't see that as all that improbable. I imagine Hitchens will do a lot of things once you get a few drinks in him. Ask him today, and I guarantee that he has no idea what he did at any point yesterday after 11 am.
Happy MLK/Inauguration Eve day people.
Might well have been his wife, Carol Blue. She is not unattractive.
Post-racial? Not so fast. David Shuster was running through the list of entertainers for Inauguration Day, ending with "Mary 'Bilge'". No correction given, even after the commercial. Uy yai yai...The last thing us white people need is more white people who can't dance dancing in public, and pasty white talk show hosts hacking up the names of award-winning black artists.
re Dime Piece
I would think white folks would figure this one out what with that movie "10" with Bo Derek.
far out.. i like that, dime piece.. i will now proceed to use this a lot for beautiful girls, ruining the word for black people! and i'm not even white - post-racial indeed! -sv
PS i was using 'bonjour' until now so it's not like i'm a serial slang-killer
Christopher Hitchens Mid-Groove?! I. . . I want to see that. Please tell us you have a video or a picture. Every time I've seen him he looked far too drunkenly depressed to breath let alone dance.
Then what does a woman have on her hip when she is with a hot man?
Adolphus: Then what does a woman have on her hip when she is with a hot man?
I'm gonna go with "Mancake"...
Dang, my mind is a blank on what hot guys are called. When I was in high school they were "hunks."
sgwhiteinfl, I thought about that awhile ago that the origin of "dime piece" goes back to men rating women on a scale of 1 to 10, and that movie with Bo Derek was titled accordingly.
I have no recollection of women rating men on a scale, and my memory is still pretty good.
I also remember that men referred to women who were not attractive to them as "dogs," but I can't remember referring to men as "dogs."
Maybe it's because we were more interested in the guy's money (haha.)
Liza: Maybe it's because we were more interested in the guy's money (haha.)
For good reason it seems: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article5537017.ece
Headline: Wealthy men give women more orgasms
Adolphus,
Yeah, I saw that yesterday.
Well, it's too late for me, sad to say.
Hey TNC, did Hitch ask you for some tongue too?
Dayum, TNC.
Now I can't get the visual of Hitchens singing the TJ Swan parts of "Nobody Beats the Biz" and "Albee Square Mall" out of my head.
Oh my, oh golly... you lot are suckers for a bit of Bri'ish... the moment someone says 'Cheers, luv' you go all fuzzy.
Bloody hell! Christopher Hitchens dancing... I'm going to have to lay down for a bit with some Dexy's.
@Daphne...apparently, even brits have their limits...
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2009/01/christopher_hitchens_blames_to.html
Biz is white wedding music at this point, I don't see the improbability of this at all.
Cheers, Bruce.
D.C. is turning into Benidorm, how disheartening...
Well...it's definitly shocking for Hitchens and his followers...apparently there are people who don't think he's irresistable...well..to some extent...
I cackled to myself when I read this in the first para of Hitchens's Slate column this week:
And yes, that was me at the ball given by The Root, making a mild fool of myself as I boogied chubbily on down to the strains of Biz Markie, DJ to the capital's black elite.

A dime-piece is a woman who is "a perfect 10." (a dime = 10 cents = A 10) The term "piece" is odd and problematic.
Mostly we're confused because we can't imagine Hitchins dancing with a woman, much less a "10"
"A dime-piece is a woman who is "a perfect 10." (a dime = 10 cents = A 10) The term "piece" is odd and problematic."
Heh. You ain't heard nothing. Some cats simply dispense with the dime and say "Is that your piece?" Of course one could say it's a compliment given that a piece can also be a gun...Hmmm, maybe not. In all seriousness, the piece came before the woman reference. Dime-Piece is closer to Fifty Cent Piece for instance. In other words, it wasn't added as the word came to describe a woman. It was there before.
Dime = ten cents.
Ten = perfect woman.
Black people = attaching "piece" to the end of certain nouns ("dome-piece" for head, etc).
19-year-old white kid = smarter than everybody else.
