New Comment Policy Pt.2

24 Mar 2009 07:02 pm

So yeah, as you guys can see there are some changes. We're going with registration, for now. I'm still trying to work out a couple other things, but this is the first step. I agree the full moderation is something I should work hard to avoid. I'm hoping we can go to a trust system.

So did I just register?

Okay.

Cheers to a new commenting era where people won't say things like:

.
FIRST!

First to reply

wiredog (Replying to: Bruce)

First to reply to the first to reply to the first.

This makes sense.

As a very infrequent commenter but hugely frequent comment reader, I really appreciate the more moderate approach. If there's to be comment control, best not to jump to the most extreme available version.

As always, thanks for listening to, thinking about, and just plain considering the feelings of your happy commenting community.

I also really like the ability to directly reply to a specific comment.

Deborah (Replying to: eddy)

Seeing how that feature works....

Of course you could always entrust those of us who comment frequently with the power to edit and ban at will....but this is probably a good way to prevent a backlog of "that was just like the Packers game in '06" comments stacking up.

Ooh I like this.

Liturgy Geek (Replying to: Jamilah)

love it!!!!

I just wish I didn't have to sign in every time I want to post a comment. But it's better than no commenting at all.....

Mark Mays (Replying to: JustSomeGuy)

It (registration) tends to be a discussion killer but I guess it keeps the barbarians at bay.

one of the attractions of your blog imo are the people from many different walks of life, political stripes and cultures that congregate around this particular watering hole who all seem to enjoy slinging ideas and viewpoints back and forth.

i hope it will still be possible to sometimes let the sparks fly, fight it out, agree to disagree and move on.

after all, promoting an idea that was perceived as obscene and preposterous by many at the time (the abolition of slavery) was one of the main reasons behind the founding of this magazine.

it wasn't always about publishing odes to the many different shades of militarism...

AJ in Boston

No live blogging the POTUS speech? I was hoping someone would comment on Barack's decision to wear eye shadow tonight...

Nice. The reply feature is a big plus. This was definitely "the change we need!"

Mr. Green Jeans

Like every evening, this evening I came to the conversation late and spent a long time reading and catching up on all that was said in the comments section for the original post. I just went hunting the TNC archives to the brilliant discussion of this blog's mission, and I came upon Liza's take from 1/25/09. I think she hit the nail on the head.

"The purpose of the Ta-Nehisi Coates blog is to provide insightful commentary on a wide range of topics including old black shit, nerdy video games, generic lib politics, hip-hop, cranky generational issues, Reinhold-fucking-Niebhur, football, and weekly poetry. Original postings on these subjects intend to inspire equally thoughtful conversating among a diverse group of blog readers. The blog is moderated and comments that are obscene, harassing, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable are not allowed."

I am so relieved that the conversating will continue. (BTW - I just learned to use the blockquote!)

Yeah, what happened to Friday poetry? I didn't like the inauguration poem much, but I ain't a hater. Bad poets need love to, no discrimination this world...to paraphrase Big Boi.

Liturgy Geek (Replying to: Mr. Green Jeans)

Could you educate some of us neophytes on the blockquoting here at TNC?

Kathleen Fallon

Your previous post on the new comment policy got me thinking: first, I was excited, and challenged to really think about what, if anything, I have to add to a conversation. Then I got skeered that I wasn't smart enough, funny enough, insightful enough to make the cut. I'm always amazed at the garbage from my childhood that still pops up and tried to smack me down again.

Think I'll stick with the challenge part.

Thanks for all you do.

Fighting Words (Replying to: Kathleen Fallon)

Kathleen,

Don't worry. I am not smart enough, funny enough, or insightful enough to make the cut, but I comment all the time...

Vichus Smith

I'm glad you finally decided to implement this. This is a step up!

Doctor Science

I have a login name and password. THE POWER!!

ahem. Carry on.

Persia (Replying to: Doctor Science)

Are you practicing your evil laugh yet? I am.

I like this. And it gave me an excuse to change my alias from cd to duffman.

All things in moderation, except for excess, or something. I need a Brompton's Cocktail.

So, anybody know what prompted this? Did I miss some drama?

FWIW, I think this is a sensible way to run a big, popular blog, esp. if you want to keep it at the quality it has been.

I have nothing relevant to say. Just wanted to register and try out the new comments. Seems like a good compromise.

lebecka (Replying to: Tinare)

me either. I just want to try it!!

bread & roses (Replying to: lebecka)

Me too, me too! Does someone want to explain block quotes to the ignorant?

Oh, moderation. Not so much a virtue as 'tis an eschewal of vice.

Here's hoping this tamps down the more . . . excitable? execrable? annoying and distracting? . . . comments while leaving this forum open enough for honest discussion.

Hey, it could happen.

me likey it

So this is why I couldn't reply to the previous post? ..phew! I thought I was banned. LOL

Like the change

It's unfortunate to have to regulate comments on a site. It's also necessary to keep out the barbarians. Speaking as a barbarian I am about as amused as Obama was with the question from the CNN reporter earlier tonight.

Now I shall give my icy stare:

Scared yet?

I didn't think so.

Hopefully, this will work well or at least well enough to keep full moderation at bay.

it works it works!!

and this new set-up is graphically more attractive than the old way; or is that just on my browser?

Nothing of import. Just take the shiny new system for a test drive.

Just signing on & getting on-system. Even when I don't write, I read daily. An email coming from my blog - today, I hope - on last nite's proving yet again that Obama is too-often the only adult in the room....or, maybe, it's that we have a Press full of adults playing grown-up...

OK. I'm official -- registered and all.

Now, can someone please, please take pity on me (and one or two other posters I've noted) as I do not know how to do block quotes. I want to follow the rules (I really do) like everyone else and be a block quotes expert. In one or two sentences, can someone help a sista out?

wiredog (Replying to: Storm)

You use the blockquote tag: <blockquote> what you want to quote </blockquote>

I just learned to blockquote! Thanks!!

Liturgy Geek (Replying to: GAPeach7)
this is a test of the Liturgy Geek Blockquoting tutorial

It works!

Storm (Replying to: wiredog)

Thanks, I will give it a try..Let's see if this works. Trying it below with your comments. If this doesn't work...where can I find the

tag? What I did was enclose your quote in .

what you want to quote >

I realize this may becoming boring and idiotic to other posters, so if someone would like to email meinstructions to storm5292004@yahoo.com, I would be very grateful.

Cool! It does work. Love the preview too!

bread & roses (Replying to: wiredog)

so now I can

use the blockquote tag

like everyone else. Thanks, wiredog! I was using the plain quote tag.

We are guests at the House of Ta-Nehisi. His comment policy is his comment policy.

Kathleen, like Fighting Words said, that has never stopped me from commenting. So feel free to shoot your mouth off

Talk about putting the plastic on the couch...

Sweet.

I can deal with this.. and I like the nesting comments so much better than a long string

While this thread was no doubt necessary, I think it's safe to say that this collection of comments is the most useless, inane, and pointless in the history of this blog. Except for the Dallas Cowboy ones.

I'm baaaaack!!! Yay!

THANK YOU for getting me past the evil Movable Type gremlins! And my apologies for being such a cranky, whinging tosser.
