The Next WoW

19 May 2009 03:00 pm

So much for World of Starcraft. Whatever they do, it's going to have to have a serious PvP system to make me wander over. WoW may be it for the kid. It's going to take something compelling to get me to play another MMO.

I have to disagree myself there. PvP is nearly impossible to do well in MMOs. You either make the equipment highly standardized and set (i.e. sniper kits and whatnot in first person shooters) or you get people who plow so much time into it that it just becomes silly and boring getting killed over and over by 14 yr olds on their third monster of the night.

I think that's true, and I thought that was part of the reason why Blizzard added vehicle combat to PvP (so vehicles would be the same regardless of how advanced your character is). However, with this new patch, apparently the strength of the vehicle will depend on how good your gear is. That seems like it would undermine the benefits of that standardization.

Personally I'm waiting for Champions Online, but that's the superhero geek in me.

There's already a LOTR MMO ... I've been tempted to try it, but ultimately decided against it. There are only so many hours in a day, and other things I need to be doing.

I'd be interested in a good SF-themed MMO, should one come along. I hope that's what Blizzard is working on, despite the news that it's not based on Starcraft.
