I'm not so much sorry that I'm a racist fuck, as I'm sorry I made the mistake of informing you that I'm a racist fuck:

Newscoma posted details of a racist email sent from Sherri Goforth, legislative aid for Sen. Diane Black
(R-Gallatin). The email depicts the Presidents of the United States
with President Barack Obama as a pair of eyes in a black background.
I spoke with Sherri Goforth minutes ago to confirm she sent this
email. She confirmed she had sent it and also said she had received a
letter of reprimand from her superiors but said she will stay on the
job.

When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the
photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally
sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to
address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that
she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.

"I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong
button," Goforth told NIT. "I'm very sick about it, and it's one of
those things I can't change or take back."

On another note, I just got a good letter from a cat in South Carolina, who noted that a lot of Southern whites are so sick and embarrassed by this sort of thing. He added that the guilt from their image as a racist backwater affects a kind of paralysis. He wanted to assure me that these fools don't represent the South.

Seems fair to me. I know white Southerners, and the GOP gets tired of being tarred with the racist tag. That said, it's worth considering that black people get tired of being the targets of people who are tired of being tarred with the racist tag.

Seriously folks. In terms of diplomacy between white and black, the South Sides, the Harlems and the West Baltimores of the world can't do much better than the Obamas. Whenever I see this sort of thing I just wonder what they'd say we'd sent them Sharpton.

In terms of your frustrated correspondent, there are signs of change--remember the "Real Virginia" comment from this last election, which prompted the discovery that Real Virginia was the part of Virginia south of a line somewhere in the middle of South Carolina? And someone in the last thread noted that Allen and Dole lost their seats for racist comment and religious attack, but in swing states--Virginia and North Carolina didn't used to be swing states.

From the comments on the story, it seems using one's state time to fritter away forwarding e-mails is a firing offense. I'd love to see this get more play--here's your tax dollars at work, folks! Sure you want to keep her boss around, so she can keep e-mailing up a storm?

I'd also like to see some more protest from the ever-diminishing non-crazy branch of the Republicans. Denounce this following up with action: no one believes the "it's just some entertainer" schtick when its GOP officials and officeholders and their employees sending out the Obama watermelon bucks. Get brave enough to threaten a purge: you might be purged back but at least then you're free to get started on a noncrazy conservative party. Sincerely, an independent who would like to have a 2-party system again.

Sorry, I meant: She could be fired for the misuse of government resources, just like a lot of us could be fired for using our work e-mails for private communication. In practice most employers don't care if you get the kids' PTO stuff and your spouse's "could you get milk" e-mails, but will discipline or fire for forwarding porn to everyone on your list, or using the work computer to hang out at porn sites. The content triggers the firing, but there is a simple "don't do your porn on our dime, time, and broadband" rationale. The aide could be fired for the same rather than fired for the specific e-mail content. But she isn't. And so her employer deserves unremitting public shaming, and the other state Republicans need to step up on the purging....as with those Palin rallies, standing quietly in line while the person next to you waves their monkey doll at the camera and spouts conspiracy theories doesn't make you look sane and rational by comparison; it makes you look like you agree.

Can this woman really be that dumb? The only other thing I could possibly think she meant is that she forwarded the wrong email. That she was actually trying to forward some really inspiring prayer chain email, but accidentally clicked on the racist one. Yes, I realize that this would be giving her far too much credit, but the other option just seems beyond dumb. Even for these people.

Yeah, about the only possible out she could have is more of a Colbert approach, I had a friend who lived in Alabama who would send me stuff like that, but the intent was to laugh at the people who created it, not the racist jokes. I have another friend whose family are right wing nuts who send him every one of the bizzare chain emails about birth certficates and so on, he forwards them to me to laugh at.

Of course if she had meant to do that the message would have started with something like:

"Look at the racist nonesense someone sent me, see what I have to put up with?"

Or if she just meant to send it to a friend she had ongoing communication with it might have been simply "here's another one" with the other person knowing what she meant. Of course if that were the case she would have said so in her apology.

In fact some smart republican operatives in the South should be "accidentally" forwarding emails like that to wide distribution lists. Of course if republican operatives in the south were actually that smart they wouldn't be in the mess they are:-)

Side-by-side, this lady's "apology" is way, way awesomer than Magilla Gorilla's. His "apology", if you held it up to the light in a certain way and squinted could kind of sort of be construed as some sort of apology. This lady just went ahead and flat out said "fuck you, I'm not sorry." At least it's honest, I guess.

P.S. - This part, where we are asked to consider giving Southern whites the benefit of the doubt? Aren't the people getting called out over the past coupla days very clearly "representing" the South? I mean, these people were voted for (or work for someone who was voted for.) It's not like they're just entertainers or athletes who happen to be from the South. Someone voted them in.

I'm not sure what part of the south he lives in but here in Atlanta Metro/Georgia, racism is alive and well and come election day, people here will elect representation that use words like "upity" and who will sponsor legislation to refuse birthright citizenship and they will come out en masse to do it.
New York and the Boston area are two of the most racist places I've ever visited family members in. Does anyone remember when the black guy was trying to buy a used car and was killed in Howard Beach by whites?

Does anyone remember the guy killing his wife and the Boston police hauling blacks off to jail in the middle of the night, because they were black?

All of that was recent history and it happened in the Northeast. There are lots of other examples of nothern racial hatred and you guys know it. Stop acting like the south is the only place it has happened. If the south is so bad why are nothern cities being depleted of people because they are moving south for a better life.
Atlanta and Charlotte are just two of many cities in the south where blacks are doing very well. When will we get real? My answer? NEVER!
We see what we want to see and ignore everything else. The difference in me is this; I'm black and love being black but I am not blind!

you are one wacky black Republican. You even have a thing for Sarah Palin............that's kinda cute.

I can quite understand black Republicans. Strikes me as a cow being the leading spokesman for McDonalds.

I kid Rob.

Here's just one of your more amusing postings:

"Here's another post you fearful left wingers can crack up on. This is not the last time you will see Sarah Palin on a national stage. The media did all they could to attack her like they did Bush but it did not work. Wherever she went there were large crowds longing to see and hear her. She will be back, those of us on the right will see to it.

As for Tina Fey playing Sarah Palin, I'm delighted she has decided to stop. She really didn't look much like Sarah Palin with her boney face and nose. Mrs. Palin is much more attractive then Tina will ever be.

We're going to have some fun dogging Obama for a while now. The left was vicious and we learned from them how to dog a president his whole term. Thanks for the lessons!"

Dude, if you want to point to any of my representatives or their staffs sending an e-mail like the one above, I will happily demand that Tsongas, Kennedy, or Kerry fire that person. Hasn't happened. It's a straw man.

Boston has a sharp color divide. It doesn't make the e-mail in question okay, or the "gosh sorry I hit that wrong button" apology okay, or the general lack of anyone in the TN Rs being appalled and demanding that firing okay. TN acting stupid this week is not excused by NY acting stupid a decade ago....and most of the state managed to come out on the correct side even back then.

TN Rs need to start sending the "I am shocked that someone used government time for this, and it reflects badly on our party" message, not the "well, these people are around, can't say anything against them" message.

I think there are white racists somewhat equally distributed throughout this great land of ours, unfortunately, and I'm from Boston, so believe me I know and am related to some of them. My point was the white Southern guy asking us to believe that the politicians from that area are not representing the people from that area is just not true. Obviously at some point a majority of people voted for them. So, own the shit, or change and vote for someone else. Last time I checked Massachusetts and New York had black governors. When that happens in Virginia or Mississippi, I'll be more convinced that things are changing in the South.

If there was a racist pol from Boston who said or did something as nasty as the couple of things covered in the posts today, I'd be on his/her ass, too.

The small-town South is full of white racists who have never had anyone tell them to cut it out. Forty years ago, it was safer just to let jokes like that go. For at least twenty years, it's just seemed like the fools were so hopeless it wasn't worth the effort. Maybe self-respecting white people were hoping our embarrassing neighbors would shape up on their own, or their children would have more sense, but today by itself is enough to prove that strategy has failed.

It's time to start telling people they're behaving indecently and that we, individually, personally, wish they would cut it out. And occasionally, that we wish a particular person would crawl into a cave and hide because their recent conduct counts as letting down OUR race.

Now compare and contrast these two non-apologies to David Letterman's apology to Sarah Palin last night:

"It doesn't make any difference what my intent was, it's the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it's not a very good joke. And I'm certainly - " (audience applause) "- thank you. Well, my responsibility - I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault. That it was misunderstood." (audience applauds) "Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much."

That seems like a real apology, at least. (I'll save my comments about manufactured outrage for later.)

Juba, don't accept the argument that Baltimore is in the south! The only people I've ever met who like that argument are people from Maryland, and everybody knows they can't be trusted. Nobody cares about the stupid Mason-Dixon line. It has nothing to do with North and South. If Delaware is North, so is Maryland. There, I've said my piece.

This makes me really want to see some black public personality try to use that line... or any minority for that matter.

Have them say something bigoted --or even not bigoted and have the right-wing go nuts, and then have them say "I'm not racist, some of my best friends are white.."

Because they honestly assume that there are three groups of people:

1. Blacks, who really, honestly are her inferiors and who SHOULD be treated like garbage so that they "learn their place" as inferiors
2. Total and complete utter idiots, ie. liberals
3. Weasels who use "politically correct" words because they're too cowardly to tell the truth, but who secretly agree with them 100%. In their minds, about 95% of whites fall into this category.

That's why racists never really apologize. They are convinced beyond argument that they are the only ones brave enough to stand up against those evil, evil, uppity blacks and the total idiot liberals who are too dumb to see blacks as inferiors.
